The 1 (of 2) flys you need for the beach fly fishing…
5 stars. I purchased this sand flea immitation and the other shrimp imitation from the same company. All 5 species in the picture (plus a whiting not pictured) were hammered on these flys. Fished morning, afternoon and evening in September in the surf off the beach in Gulf Shores Alabama. I found a nice sand bar and was throwing back in toward the beach, and along the sand bar rift for every one of these fish, stripping against the current since most the bait I observed was looking up current. I changed up the stripping patterns quite a bit. For the lady, Jack and Spanish Mack I was doing quick 6 inch strips as soon as it it hit the water. Sometimes waiting for it to fall a bit below the surface then would strip fast 6” strips again. For the flounder and pompano and whiting, I would let it fall to the bottom of the trough off the sandbar and bump it a few times barely 1-2” strips, wait, then do that all the way until I retrieved my line. Really great fly. Worth the money, they lasted the whole trip.My rig was pretty basic. Just an 8 wt medium stiff 9’6” rod, with my fresh water 6 wt reel (yes I kept it out of the surf as much as possible and rinsed it every day twice a day with fresh water). My real ain’t worth much anyways, just a cheap max catch off Amazon, but it’s held up to 4 years of abuse. For line I just used a basic clear forward tapered intermediate sink line (it was like 18 bucks on Amazon), and leader/tippit I was just using some 20lb fluorocarbon for salt water. I did start with a 12lb bone fish leader (I think 3x) from Rio, but that got cut down pretty quickly and ended up switched to only floro that was not tapered at all.Might seem like a rookie set up but I caught a lot of fish and had a lot of fun.

Much lighter color than shown in pictures
While these flies seem well made, they are definitely several shades lighter than the picture. While they are technically a light tan color, I was expecting something darker. I daubed on brown permanent ink to make them darker and hope they will now work.
