• The instructions are terrible. Really terrible
When looking at wireless locks I had looked at this lock and the Quicklock Doorlock. Unfortunately, that seemed more designed for interior doors. Several of the manufacturers pictures show it locking a bedroom and a closet, and on Amazon it is listed under “Gate locks”. One of the reviews also indicated it wasn’t heavy duty at all.So… I focused on this lock, but had several reservations. First, as another reviewer pointed out, some of the reviews are clearly fakes. Second, the company doesn’t have a web site. I wanted to download the manuals before buying it… reading the manuals is where you often discover the “gotchas” of a product.Misgivings aside, I ordered the lock. When it arrived my very first thought was “this thing is heavy!” It certainly is NOT a flimsy lock. However, that’s when the negatives started piling up:• The instructions are terrible. Really terrible. For example… the handle is switchable… it can point to the right or to the left. There are drawings showing the handle in both positions. But there wasn’t a single word about how to switch it!• Looking through the manual there was no mention of a web site for support issues with the lock.• There is a support number though. In China. Yes, you have to dial Country Code 86 to get support, and from what I could tell no one there speaks English… only Chinese.• I eventually figured out how to switch the handle from right to left (viewed from the outside). I removed a locknut from the inside of the lock, but discovered a split-ring washer still holding the handle in place. Now, I consider myself quite a handyman… but don’t own a pair of split-ring pliers. If I decided to install the lock I’d have to borrow or buy a pair.• You also have to drill an additional hole through the door. Meaning that if you change your mind about this lock (now or 2 years from now) you have a hole you need to do something with.• It doesn’t come with a lock cylinder! Instead it comes with a “lock body” that won’t fit any residential door I’ve ever owned. It looks like it may be intended for commercial installations. However, if you have an existing, working lock that you are replacing you should be able to leave the existing lock cylinder in place… I have done that before, and this mechanism looks pretty standard.• The app that anyone would use to unlock the door isn’t in the App Store. Instead you go to a Chinese web site (apparently the web site for the app, not the lock itself), translate it to English, and go to a page that states: “Slough change. This moment, accompanied with a while to the change only to leave you more near some”. That’s where you download the app. I can’t imagine anyone being willing to download the app. I certainly wouldn’t.• Finally, there is a deal-breaker detail in the operation of the lock. In its default configuration (handle to the right) you would open the door from the outside by pushing down on the handle, which I think is intuitive. They have a kind of cool feature… lifting the handle upwards locks the door. The problem is that when you switch the handle to the left those items switch as well. You open the door by lifting on the handle. Not intuitive, but you would get used to it. But pushing down on the handle LOCKS THE DOOR! I could imagine someone stepping outside for a second without their phone, and when they are going back inside pushing the handle down (the natural way I’d expect to open a door) and locking themselves out. That could be an inconvenience or a disaster (if it’s 20 below zero outside!).Way, way, way too many negatives for me. I returned the lock and got a 10-key pushbutton lock at Home Depot. I will just create a few codes that I can give to people, and then delete those codes after they have been used.
