Great for Chins
I don't know why all the poor reviews...my Chin loves this thing and it really does give a cleaner easier way to feed hay to her. Before, she was just poop and pee all over the hay we put in there in her bowl so she wouldn't touch the stuff. I will say that she tends to waste alot of it by just pulling it out for fun but the stuff is 4 bucks a bale so i'm not all that worried. I did put a bowl underneath to gather what falls out so its not all wasted. The problem people are having is that the door doesn't stay latched. On the cage part of the ball, there is a door that opens up. If any hay is in the way or you OVER stuff it, then it won't latch, but I will say that I packed a ton in it and it works fine. Its the same metal that most cages are made out of so you know that its a little bendalbe. It is possible that over time it won't latch (i've only had this a week or two), but its good for now.As far as plastic goes...yes, if you have a nibbler you need to keep all pastic items out of the cage. It will kill them. BUT, this is made of a strong enough plastic, and we keep it just high enough for her to only be able to reach the bottom part. She hasn't chewed on the plastic part at all. Its strong and sturdy so it does the job. Just be prepared for a HUGE mess in your floor because this thing slings hay all over the place!

Awesome product
Let's start off by just accepting there is no way to keep hay off the bottom of the cage. I find the pigs are far too determined to make a mess. That being said, I found this product to do the best at keeping hay off the ground for the most part. Not only that but the pigs have fun with it. It does what it's supposed to do and it's also cute to have in the cage. It is fairly large compared to other hay racks I have seen and I thought that was much appreciated, it doesn't need to be filled as often. If you complain that it is too large for your cage, you have too small of a cage. People complained about the door, I haven't had a problem with it. It opens and closes easily, I also don't have a problem just shoving the hay right through the opening. It hangs up on the cage wall and it works well with c&c cages. Simple, fun, well built, and does what it's supposed to.

Great product
I bought this for my guinea pig in an attempt to keep his hay up off of the floor of his cage. For the most part, it does its job. My pig quickly learned how to use it and has no problem pulling the hay out, which was a concern I had when buying it. I saw on another review that someone had cut some of the wires away to make it easier to get to the hay, but I don't think that would be necessary.I do have a couple of issues with it. First, I found the little door on it to be much too small to try to fill it. However the plastic sides do come off, so I just take one side off to fill it.No matter how I set it up, whether I just stand it on the floor or hang it on the cage wall, my piggy finds a way to knock it over. And he likes to pull lots of hay out of it all at once, which still winds up making a bit of a mess, but at least all the hay is mostly in one place. I guess those aren't necessarily flaws with the product but my guinea pig. lolSo yes, this is a nice product. Its probably neater and nicer looking than most other products I saw when shopping around, and seems to be easy to use. I would recommend this product, just remember that animals are messy no matter what you do!

As good as it gets
I've tried four different hay feeders, and this is by far the best.Pros:-Pigs eat from it no problem.-Stores a lot of hay.-Easy to fill without spillage (pop off side and stuff full)-Minimal spillage onto the cage floor.Cons:-Takes up a lot of space.-Can be awkward to position. For me, hay feeders are a battle between making hay accessible and minimizing mess. This feeder makes the hay a little less accessible than I'd like, but is a good compromise nonetheless.Other Thoughts:This feeder would be perfect if the wires ran vertical instead of horizontal - the pigs often have to tilt their head sideways to grab the hay. Also, the wire door is completely useless - the manufacturer should seal it off and rather expect users to pop off the plastic sides. Finally, the design would be optimized if the sides were also made of wire mesh instead of solid plastic, allowing for maximum accessibility.

Damaged
Came in a bent up box with the wire holder bent oval to hold a round shaped dispenser. Wire door latch almost bent in half

Much better than normal wire hay ball.
I want to address an issue that other reviewers have mentioned. "The door is too small and doesn't stay shut."My question is this- when has hay ever NOT been a messy job? I have used all sorts of hay holders, and even just plopped it down in the floor of the cage, and I always make a mess. It's not the result of whatever container I am putting it in... it's because hay is messy when you pull it out of the bag.To solve this problem, I always fill up the hay ball over something else that I can quickly wipe the stray hay off of. If you have a larger hay bag, you can fill it up inside the bag. Otherwise, fill it up over the trash can, or a table, or anywhere that you don't mind having hay or can easily clean it off. Before this hay holder, I was using a Ware Manufacturing Hay Ball, and I am much happier with this "rollin' the hay" holder. As for the door not staying shut, I can't comment because I just got this thing yesterday. I'll come back in a couple months to update.

Entertaining, encourages hay eating, versatile use
This hay holder is the best product I have bought for my guinea pigs. They are obsessed with this thing. I also like that it is so versatile - I can hook it from the side of the cage, but it can also stand on its own. This simple hay holder has given my piggies many, many hours of fun - they love to roll the ball back and forth, squeeze themselves under it, pull hay out of it enthusiastically, and fight over who gets to play with it. Many times, I will come into the room, unhook the ball from the side of the cage, stand it upright in the middle of the cage, and the piggies will groggily wake up from their naps in order to play and nuzzle with the ball for hours. Best thing I ever bought for them, period.
