You have to use them when is kind of dark, not totally but dark enough. The best thing is to buy rechargeable 9V batteries, the kind that have a micro USB port at the bottom because these lights will eat a regular battery plus the rechargeable ones last longer and are pretty cheap. The light is lively and if you put them under and in between logs in a fire pit it will look like the real thing.

these light have worked for years. I use them as amber lights along with a fire bulb and a colored light diffuser to look like smoke. If these ever burn out I would definitely buy them again
