The Devil Wears Black

This book is absolutely phenomenal. It was unputdownable & everything you expect and more from Ms Shen. It had LJ’s touch stamped on it yet it was so unique. I was enthralled with Chase and Maddie and couldn’t put the book down once I started reading. Chase inner monologues were pure gold. I was literally cracking up. They were sooo sooo good. After I finished the book I went back to read them all over again and they cracked me up and had me laughing all over again. Chase is unlike any hero Ms Shen has written. He has the bad boy vibes but with a heart of gold. Every girl wants Chase Black in her life. I loved the witty banter and back n forth between Chase and Maddie. I didn’t want the book to end. Loved both Maddie n Chase. These two were relatable characters .What I love about this story is it was a wholesome read . It was fun , sweet , with the most adorable characters and had perfect touch of emotions that tugs your heart. Without doubt Chase and Maddie won my heart. Maddie is the girl next door and everyone would want a Chase in their life. He was so perfect. Chase is a perfect specimen of Devil and Saint. He is alpha male with a bad boy vibes yet he is a boy next door with a soft heart. Ms Shen created the perfect book friend for us to swoon over . I am not ashamed to say I have been a huge fan of Vicious and no other hero could cross the bar he had set for me. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed and like all of her Heros but Vicious is special and no one could close to him. I had a love hate relationship with his character. If Vicious is dark than Chase is a bright spot. Where Vicious instilled angry emotions until of course he redeemed himself Chase just makes your heart melt and want to cuddle him. Most of LJ Shen books I have read the main protagonist are bad boy with alpha male vibes and there is angst in her stories which I have enjoyed but after reading TDWB I am hoping LJ writes more romance with witty banter and light moments. She has done an epic job with this story. It is one of my favorites from LJ Shen.The plot was heartwarming and captivating and characters were very realistic . I had preordered paperback, ebook and audiobook when it became available for preorder back in June of 2020 but I was over the moon I got selected to read an arc copy and couldn’t believe it for a while I got an arc for a moment I thought the book got published early since I have never received arc for her books and I wasn’t expecting I would get it this time around as well . I still can’t wait for my paperback n audiobook & reread / listen to the story. This is one of those books even when you reread you would still love the story and fall more for the characters. A beautiful heartwarming feel good second chance love story with all the feels and witty banter that melt your heart and leave you with a dreamy smile long after you end the story. Loved it and can’t recommend it enough. Deserves all the flowery stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cute, fast read. 3.5 ⭐️. I liked the characters and their development, The story flowed smoothly. Would recommend to people that want a fast read.

Cute but not super spicy. A good quick read. Good palette refresher. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌶️🌶️ normally used to books by L.J. Shen being spicier but it was a cute story. Smiled my way through the ending for sure.

I could have liked the book better if it were better balanced. Apparently, there is little doormat streak in me; therefore, I do not appreciate the heroine being treated as she is in romance books. The hero comes to his senses too late for me. I would not take him back if I were the heroine, especially not for such a poor excuse of a proposal. I think the book would have gained if the hero had started chasing the heroine from the moment of the azaleas scene. But that was not the case, and therefore, for me, there was too little romance and too much push and pull for my liking.

I am a rom-com gal. I like light stories. Nothing too heavy. This is a cute story with some interesting elements.

Adorei o livro e a forma de escrita da autora, adorei a forma com que ela construiu os personagens e como sustentou eles até o final. Super recomendo! Vou procurar outros livros dessa mesma autora!

Lj Shen never disappoints

I absolutely loved this book. From the very first page I was hooked. Can I just say the Maddie should be my best friend. I loved her slink, sarcasm, and heart. She made you want all the good things life has to give, be given to her.And Chase. Wow. Not you typical book boyfriend, but in the end he redeems himself. You get to know him and find yourself rooting for him as well.Great story, great characters, what more could you ask for.

To tell you I DEVOURED this book would be an understatement! I did not expect for it to be this good. I finished it in 2 days with only a few hours of sleep. I literarily COULDN’T.PUT.IT.DOWN.The story sucked me in from the first chapter. I love it when a book starts directly with a straight-to-the-point meet between the protagonists and not dragging the inevitable for a few chapters just for the sake of it. That is why I applaud L.J. Shein’s writing style because it gave me all the feels from the beginning.I must admit I’m not a super big fan of the second-chance trope but this one was delivered like a true masterpiece, which is the case for the whole book. The more you go into the story the more you understand it was the best for them to separate ways the first time. It helped mostly Maddie to get rid of her insecurities and be her true self when she meets Chase the second time round. And thanks to that Chase also felt liberated and was able to become his true self around Maddie, so they could realise (just as us the readers) why they are a perfect fit.Don’t get me wrong, they were times I wanted to punch both of them for being stubborn idiots, but I think that that is also the beauty of this book: showing that anyone can make mistakes and change and that nothing in life is only black or white. In other words, I could feel the characters as true human beings and could relate to both of them on a personal level.And yeah, I’m in love with Chase Black and his character development. But I also love that Maddie also went through an even bigger character development. Most of the times, in books like this, the female protagonist is well established from the beginning and doesn’t change much throughout the book. It’s always the alpha male that does the growing up. But here, it was both of them and it only added to their love story feeling more genuine and authentic.Last but not least, I loved how the author approached the question of tragedy happening in the book. She did it in a way that celebrated life rather than mourning death and gave bittersweet feelings to it (not the deaths of the main characters, don’t get alarmed!).I give it a 10/10. Masterpiece!
