If you want to do a lap blanket in one piece, I would get a 36" extension hook. I was able to make a nice 3' x 5' blanket suitable for lap or baby use with a hook that size. If you want to do entrelac, you can use a regular crochet hook for smaller squares or use a 10" Tunisian hook for bigger squares.
