Sweet seat
After waiting and saving for nearly all of our 20-year marriage, my wife and I started remodeling our 1950's tract home, starting with the bathrooms and kitchen. Influenced by a recommendation in Consumer Reports, we decided to splurge a bit, and selected the top-rated American Standard Champion 4 for both of our replacement commodes.Imagine my dismay when I found that this otherwise superb (and pricey) toilet came with a seat that must have cost American Standard all of $1.50. (If that.) I'm not fat (my wife says I'm too thin, actually), but I found that sitting on the lid was like sitting on a plastic trampoline. And the flimsy seat flexed so much that it was always working itself loose from its mountings. So I started researching toilet seats. A quick visit to Home Depot convinced me that I wanted a good quality wooden seat. Browsing and sorting toilet seats on Amazon revealed the Mayfair 146ECDG to be the highest-rated seat at a price and finish that was right for me. I ordered two.I was immediately impressed by the heft and flawless finish of these wooden toilet seats. Installation was a breeze: off with old fasteners (already slightly mangled from all the flexing of the seats), and on with the Mayfair bolts, which present two cylindrical buttons at the mounting points. The Mayfair seat pops onto these buttons with fasteners that you twist to lock down the seat.Voila! Seats that perfectly complement the quality and finish of our Champion 4 toilets. Zero flex, quick cleanup (although we haven't had to use the quick-removal feature yet), and yes, you can sit on the lid without it bouncing up and down. These are the seats that should have come with our $400 toilets.

This seat is so easy to install and keep clean!
I wanted to replace the toilet seats in our house because those installed by the builder were corroded (for lack of a better word) underneath after only three years. I don't know how or why that happened, but it was gross not to be able to get the seat fully clean. My son was recently potty-trained, and I did not like the idea of him touching the bottom of the seat when I wasn't sure how clean it was.So, I ordered four of these seats (Mother's Day present to myself) in two separate orders. First I ordered one used one in like new condition for much less. It was packaged as if new, so I ordered three more from Amazon Warehouse. All of those three were packaged as if new, too. However, one had a 1/2 inch place where the paint was missing along the front edge. I'm guessing these were seconds or off quality. I can touch it up with white paint when I have it out again. I put that one in the basement, so it is not a big deal either way.The only critical thing I noticed about these seats... It could be the type of commode we have, but the seats seem to install slightly off center (to the right). I played with the screws upon installation, and they still look a little off center to me (like 1/8 - 1/4 inch). No huge deal for me, but if you are ultra picky about stuff like that, then it might bother you.

What I really like about these are the hinges at the back that make removing so easy
Yes... I'm reviewing a toilet seat. I've bought this same seat for all my bathrooms. After five years, I had to replace the one in our basement because I managed to scrub-off the finish around the inner edge when I cleaned it. So, even though it was "clean," there was a dark ring around the inside of the seat. What I really like about these the hinges at the back. You can open the screw covers and pop off the seat off easy cleaning or to have your husband take the one in the boy's bathroom outside and spray it down with a hose if necessary. The description says it's wood so it has a nice sturdy feel to it, but it has some kind of shiny finish to it that makes wiping down a cinch. Would definitely buy again just because of the ease of removing for deep cleaning.

I would like to personally thank the inventor
Lift off hinges make the unpleasant chore of cleaning the toilet so much easier! The dead, dirty zone (you know where I am talking about) becomes completely accessible, and cleanable. No more squinting, jet squirting with the cleaning solution and no more trying to scrub a filthy narrow slot with an old toothbrush. This is a heavy solid feeling toilet seat, no wobbles or sag and I have not had to tighten up bolts during the two months it has been in use. The surfaces wipes clean easily with no need for heavy scrubbing or harsh chemicals. It feels weird to be praising the design of a toilet seat but I would like to personally thank the inventor for taking most of the gag factor out of one of my most dreaded housekeeping chores. This seat has changed the bathroom from procrastination central to no big deal.

A Good Seat But Does Not Align
This is a very good seat and I have two of them in the house. Mechanically, it is better than many other more expensive toilet seats from companies like Kohler or American Standard and is easy to install and clean. I have had absolutely no issues with mechanical operation, stains, finish or discoloration. Once it is installed it will not shift and move around even if you have a big butt. In fact over the past year, I have kids who have literally stood, dnaced, and jumped around on the toilet seat (dont' ask why) and these have not shifted or broken. My only problem is that the seat doesn't align toward the front. It's shape doesn't seem exactly right, but is slightly off on close inspection. Now you may say I'm being picky, but on the left side I can see about 3/8" of the toilet edge. When I look at this over time, it becomes immediately noticeable.

Hinges are the weak link -- literally
At first we thought this was a great toilet -- sturdy, solid feeling, and easy to clean, as others have said. So, we bought a second one. We are two people, neither of whom is particular large. Yet after only a year and a half, the hinges on both toilets broke. We have tried to replace the hinges, but so far haven't been able to. Even though this toilet is inexpensive, I would think it should last longer than that, and it certainly seems a shame to throw away an otherwise good toilet just because the hinges have broken. (Note that the Mayfair "hinge kit," sold elsewhere on this site, does not actually contain any hinges). If anyone knows how to get replacement hinges, I'd be much obliged (if still annoyed that the hinges were not made better in the first place).
