A Japa mala or mala (meaning garland) is a set of beads commonly used by Hindus and Buddhists, usually made from 108 beads, though other numbers, usually divisible by 9, are also used. Malas are used for keeping count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra or the name or names of a deity. This practice is known in Sanskrit as japa. Malas are typically made with 19, 21, 27, 54 or 108 beads. In Tibetan Buddhism, traditionally malas of 108 beads are used. Some practitioners use malas of 21 or 28 beads for doing prostrations. Doing one 108-bead mala counts as 100 mantra recitations, the extra repetitions done to amend any mistakes in pronunciation or other faults of recitation. Malas are mainly used to count mantras. These mantras can be recited for different purposes linked to working with mind. The material used to make the beads can vary according to the purpose of the mantras used. Some beads can be used for all purposes and all kinds of mantras.

Very spiritual
I think this mala is great. It is a black string, which I don't mind.

Fabulous
I absolutely love thes. They are my favorite meditation beads. Smooth, nice feel in hands. Skull beads are made well and look great. They also work as a bracelet or necklace. Very versatile and great price. Yak bone is nice and I get alot of compliments on them.

Perfect Mala for Kali Worship.
I was so pleasantly surprised when these arrived! I thought they were plastic and would not be as heavy as they looked ( which would have been fine ). They are carved from some kind of stone, and they are so therapeutic to run my fingers across when chanting Malas. I chose the skull pattern as I work with Kali Maa a lot and these really add to the aesthetic of my Meditation experience. The product is made well, looks amazing and came in quickly and in great shape.

Worth the price, but disappointing as a practical mala.
These beads do not feel like 8mm. They feel closer to 6mm. I do not favor 6mm bead malas because they are more difficult for me to use, as a mala. Because of the irregular shape of the beads, I am pretty sure that at the right angle you could get an 8mm measurement, but 10 seems far fetched. Whoever strung these beads, strung them too tight. They are not loose enough to drape. The mala is of sufficent length so that it can be wrapped around a wrist. Which is a common thing to do with a mala while not in use. However because these beads are so tightly strung they create tension and do not drape loosely, on the wrist, nor while using the mala as intended. ( The beads kink, rather than flow or drape.) This tension could cause the mala to break, especially with the already, inferior, string used. If not for the poor string and the tight beading and the misrepresentation of bead size. Had I run across these somewhere at this price, I would not feel disappointment. At this price I can re-string them with a beadalon wire, which is as supple as thread, but a superior strength. But this is also the source of my dissatisfaction as I paid for a mala, ready for use. The beads have the appearance and feel of a stone called howlite. The uniformity of the individual skull features, suggest machine use in their shaping.
