At Home With The Soanes: Upstairs, Downstairs in 19th Century London

Susan Pamer’s short but fascinating and well illustrated books contains a mine of information about a remarkable man and his associates as well as the customs of a long-forgotten age. The detail she provides is exemplary and I wholeheartedly recommend this small but very well researched publication.

This a really thorough and detailed descriptions of daily life in a early-Victorian household. Lots of intimate details and great illustrations.

I liked the fact that I had an easy purchase and delivery and the book arrived as expected.

John Soane (1753-1837) fut l'un des plus grands architectes anglais de la période. Sa demeure londonienne, restée en l'état, et ses très riches collections et archives, permettent de retracer ce que fut la vie d'un très grand bourgeois anglais, entre vie quotidienne et biographie. le Dr. Susan Palmer, conservateur du Sir John Soane's Museum, en retrace, d'une plume allègre et savante, de nombreux détours. Une très belle iconographie complète cet ouvrage, petit par la taille, mais dense en informations.

Really quite a sophisticated and elegant little book!
