Linear algebra has become the subject to know for people in quantitative disciplines of all kinds. No longer the exclusive domain of mathematicians and engineers, it is now used everywhere there is data and everybody who works with data needs to know more. This new book from Professor Gilbert Strang, author of the acclaimed Introduction to Linear Algebra, now in its fifth edition, makes linear algebra accessible to everybody, not just those with a strong background in mathematics. It takes a more active start, beginning by finding independent columns of small matrices, leading to the key concepts of linear combinations and rank and column space. From there it passes on to the classical topics of solving linear equations, orthogonality, linear transformations and subspaces, all clearly explained with many examples and exercises. The last major topics are eigenvalues and the important singular value decomposition, illustrated with applications to differential equations and image compression. A final optional chapter explores the ideas behind deep learning. Review: I needed to understand the process through comprehended the details of Linear Algebra. - This book together with Professor Gilbert Strang,s Fifth edition of his Introduction to Linear Algebra and the 37 video Lectures are brilliant. You need determination and a strong will but you truly understand the beauty of this branch of mathematics. A great purchase and ii has helped me in my 95th year to cope with these periods of lock down. Review: Very satisfied - I am very satisfied with the timely delivery of the book in the condition mentioned in the brief. The book is an excellent reference to Linear Algebra. However, for those who don't have good high school level mathematical skills, I would recommend Linear Algebra (Step by Step) by Kuldeep Singh.

Para começar a entender Álgebra Linear
Eu utilizo Álgebra Linear com frequência em minhas pesquisas. Assim, um livro básico e didático como esse me interessa bastante.

A refreshing way to learn and remember linear algebra
Reading Prof. Gilbert Strang's new book is humbling. The book was written during the lockdown. "Life was limited but time for writing was nearly unlimited. Difficult for our society but perfect for an author" he said. He really put some love in this subject and the text could not be clearer and simpler. Plus, he created a new way to teach Linear Algebra so that everyone can learn it faster. I love the way he stressed the 5 matrix factorizations as a good way to organize and remember linear algebra. Then, he went on with a preview of the episodes by introducing the matrices we'll meet in each episode as if they were TV series characters. Excellent read!

Oriented towards practitioners vs theoreticians. Excellent for "self-instruction"
I acquired this book to help me "reinvigorate" my rather stale linear algebra from 40 years ago - which I had nearly completely forgotten - in order to ease my way into Quantum Computing, which uses linear algebra extensively. Blessedly, the field has not stood still, and the pedagogy has changed substantially. I started by looking and Axler and then this book. For my purposes, this work was a better choice. (Axler's book is superlative and I use it as an ad-hoc reference - but it optimized for a certain audience - theoreticians and mathematicians - and I am not of that audience). This work, in contrast, is clearly targeted at practice and application. Almost all ideas, even the most abstract, are first introduced in concrete examples and exercises before being generalized. Proofs are clearly presented after the reader has had a chance to develop a mathematical "feel" for what is going on by directly manipulating small matrices and vectors. I really can't say enough good things about how this material is presented. I am over 60, and really do not have time to attend lectures regularly or wait for feedback on homework. I did nearly every problem in this book. The tie-in with MIT's OpenCourseware online was an exceptional boon. I was able to watch Dr. Strang's lectures on my own time, and answers were available for all the exercises so I could get fast feedback AFTER attempting them on my own. I envy his former students (he retired some years ago). In all, it took me about 3 months of an hour or so in the evenings to work through the first 7 chapters (absent the last section of chapter 6, which I am deferring along with chapter 8 for later when I start looking into quantum machine learning). I really can't say enough good about this one.
