Most complete ed on the market
This review is for the 3rd ed by Bantam.I teach a class on fairy tales and have many editions of this text. Obviously, Zipes is THE go to expert on all things fairy tale related. So having an intro from him is also a bonus. This ed contains the complete text from all editions, starting with the 1812 through the 1857 Ed's. These stories changed and evolved through many Ed's. The bonus of this particular ed is that it includes stories that were left out as well as other stories. The Grimms also edited a few other collections, but this is their lasting cultural and intellectual legacy.I highly recommend this edition.

Brothers Grimm
I like the extra stories. The book I've from the 70's doesn't have as many stories, but nice illustrations. This is a nice addition to my library.

Great Anthology
Very satisfied with the book, although the paper quality is not the finest. However, what really matters is to be found inside of it, and it just leaves you mesmerised with all the collected and superbly translated tales. I highly recommend this one for anyone in love with the Grimms' wonderland.

BED LECTURE AT IT'S BEST: FAIRY TALES
As I know from other seniors, the Tales by the Grimm Brothers made it long ago to the U.S.A.; they was told to from grand parents and parents to their kids and grand children, in English and even in German before and during WW1 and WW2. Some of them made it to great Walt Disney productions. And some of them were censored and published for schools as new editions.I'm so happy that a man as Jack Zipes translated (with help of best translators) all the tales of the collection of Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm (the authors). Zipes wrote also an introduction to this book which may help you to understand why the brother Grimm collected this "folk stories" - it was (so to speak) a political motivated task the brothers engaged themselves in.I really like this book, just an affordable paperback having a permanent place on my night table. Yeah, it's in English, as born Swiss my "mother tongue" is Swiss/German, now I'm living in the United States of America and read the tales (told and read to me in my youths) in English, now I can share it (tell about) in the lingo people around me can understand, even made them read some of these tales for themselves. Great Book, great work.

Exactly what I was looking for
this book is a traslation of 1857 edition with tales that are also collected from other books by the Grimms. this book as described contains mostly original stuff. of course I'd like to read the 1812 edition, which is probably the most original, but there is no book on the market that dose a decent translation on that edition. this book is not a childern's bed time story this is the real tales in it's closest form from almost 200 years ago. couldn't say more about the book, I just love it. I would go for the library binding because it's atually hard cover with quiet decent construction. pretty sure it will not fall apart for at least couple decades if you take good care of it.

I did enjoy this book
As far as I know, this is the only American translation of the Grimm tales that is complete, including several tales that were only in the original German first edition. Though the tales are all here, the only ones translated from the first edition text are those that were subsequently removed- You won't find Rapunzel claiming her clothes don't fit or the shorter version of Hansel and Gretel, so if that's what you were hoping for, this isn't it. Also, the translation doesn't have the archaic feel to it that is commonly used in fairy tales; it's basically been modernized. Aside from those two criticisms, I did enjoy this book, especially the lesser-known tales.

Enthusiasts aboard! Best version ever!
This is certainly the best and most comprehensive collection of the Grimms brothers fairytales I have ever come across. Although a lot of them are very similar, the foreword - entertaining as the stories - explains why this is so. There are many stories in here and it is great for those who wanted to know the original and "adult" versions of these tales - even though these were refined and made more palatable for children at the time - and still we insist on fluffing them up even further! Designed as fables to teach and warn kids of the ways of the world, old wisdom can still be found here - as well as entertainment, a good yarn and a laugh.
