Retractable Caster Kit for Workbench
Everything in my workshop except my lathe, is on casters, that includes my Milling Machine. My 44"x80" bench is now that last piece of equipment to has the ability to roll into a new position if needed. I designed and built my workbench in my shop while working on a Star Trek the Next Generation so it can travel to the next location or job site with ease. The bench was always intended to have some sort of caster system but not one where it rested on the wheels all the time. The selection of this casters system was specific to the weight the bench carries (ie; Oak machinist tool chest at 300lbs, surface plate at 60lbs, bend/brake at 60lbs, lower self storage at 200lbs, the bench itself at 80lbs and whatever tooling or work that is on the bench at the time). According to the specifications of the casters, I am at the casters limit, yet when I engage them and roll the bench about the shop, it floats like a breeze. The assembly and installation was super simple but I "did not" use the supplied screws to mount the caster plates to the bench legs. Instead I drilled the legs and used 2 1/2" 1/4-20 bolts with lock nuts to secure the caster plate to the legs. Wood screws always give out eventually, so with the weight of the bench and the load it carries the last thing I would want is a caster to give way while it is moving. The supplied hole pattern guide was very helpful to make a jig for drilling the holes through the leg, so if one uses the supplied screws, the guide is super handy to set the height of the screw pattern every time. The best thing to remember when installing this system is to install the main plate first, then the hinge pieces with the wheels. If you are disabled like I am and are going to use the 24 bolts rather than screws, the best way to install is the assemble the plate to the hinge pieces, mount to the legs of the bench and install the wheels last. Another small tip is to use "CAR WAX" in the areas where the hinge arm meets the caster swing arm to reduce friction. It makes engaging and then retracting the casters much easier. For the fantastic price, and the good construction of this caster system, I was extremely impressed with the quality, easy of installation and the tooling supplied to help attach the actual caster to the swing arm. If you have a bench that you need a caster system for, this is the choice to make.... period. Note: Once the casters are installed and engaged, be sure to check the stability of your bench legs. If a bench leg or legs seem to wiggle/sway where it meet the bench top as it moves, you need to brace the legs with an angle bracket of some sort as I did to avoid the legs collapsing.

These are a brilliant design idea, and work very well
Follow the instructions for measurements, I think it's important for fit and performance. I built a stand for my motorcycle to ramp it up a foot higher for maintenance. Works great but it's in the way sometimes. I installed these on all 4 corners and now it's dead solid when they're "up" and it's simple to stomp them down, even with the bike on the rack (probably 600 lbs total), and they pivot/roll super smooth so I can push the whole assembly up against the wall and use my whole garage now. I have had work benches in past garages I struggled to drag around, wish I had found these earlier, would have installed them on all my benches. They do stick out a few inches, so for a bench I'd install them on the inside of the legs, still easy to get to, but less of a trip hazard. for my bike stand I put them on the outside, to add width for stability. Great design, great quality, great instructions, easy install. Buy with confidence.

Good value for moderately heavy loads.
GOOD quality for moderately heavy rolling bench. The diagram is a bit hard to interpret and installed the plate over the wheel upside down first with the edges point down. Didn't work. Reversed and worked fine.

Good product, quick installation
Everything is included including wrenches. Template makes attaching them simple. They work great, rolls easily, simple to lift/lower.

Heavy-Duty Casters That Work Smoothly and Install Easily
I bought the 920-pound kit for my Sjobergs Original 1900 with storage cabinet, and they work great. The bench weighs over 250 pounds, and these casters handle it easily. They roll very smoothly and raise and lower the bench effortlessly. Installation was straightforward, and the design makes them easy to engage and disengage. I replaced the included screws with new ones from Home Depot, and even then, a few of the screw heads still broke. Whatever screws you use, be careful while installing to avoid snapping the heads off. When I was shopping, I read reviews on other caster sets, including those sold by woodworking supply companies. Some people pointed out that their 400 lb rating isn’t always enough because that’s the combined weight capacity across all four casters. Since you’re engaging one caster at a time, the first caster can end up supporting nearly the full weight of the bench by itself. That’s why I went with this heavier-duty set, and I haven’t looked back.

Nice casters at affordable price
Worked well, found instructions after I had put them together so look under the cardboard on bottom of box to find them. Very good price too!

Great retractable casters!
Put these on my large work bench that is around 300 pounds empty and around 450 with all my junk on the shelf. It rolls around like it’s floating on air even on the rubber mats on the garage floor. I didn’t use the supplied screws in the package. Instead I drilled holes through the 4x4 legs and used 1/4” x 4”bolts, 4 on each caster. Solid as a rock!

Seem to work fine, but could be improved...
I bought the 660-pound set for a 3x6' wooden work table I built for my shop. I planned to use six of these casters, and since the total weight isn't expected to exceed about 450-500 pounds, I elected to go with the lighter-duty (and somewhat physically smaller) casters. But even at that they're still rated to support 165 pounds per caster. I bought two kits (8 casters total, and needed the extra hardware anyway), and just installed them today and have a few observations that might help others: 1) The instructions for the 660-pound kit states to install the caster mounting plate so that it's 1.5" above the floor. This isn't quite enough. I strongly recommend that you consider making that 1.75", because at the recommended 1.5" height the wheels still touch the ground when "retracted." They are *just* touching the ground so hopefully it will be alright--but were I to do it over again, I'd make the caster bracket 1.75" above the floor for just a little bit more clearance. 2) Like any Chinese-made product, it seems that you really need to adopt an added safety factor when choosing these things. For instance: At the fully rated load of 165-pounds per caster, I seriously doubt that the fastener hardware would hold up for long. Anyone buying anything mechanical from Harbor Freight knows exactly what I'm talking about, and I typically only load this stuff to no more than 50% of the stated design loads. So in my case, if my table is projected to weigh about 500 pounds, then I'll be at about 82-83 pounds per caster, giving me a ~50% safety factor. At that weight the fastener hardware supplied with the kit should be more than adequate, even allowing for a little added weight on my table should that be necessary. 3) Like others have said, the fastener hardware (ie; nuts, bolts & screws) that come with these kits...is junk. It's ULTRA cheap. Therefore if you really want to be on the safe side--buy some better hardware. Go to Fastenal, or order from McMaster-Carr...or even get some Grade 5 stuff (at least) from your local hardware store. It's a PITA to have to do that I agree, and in my case I just "over-supported" the table I have, but it's probably necessary nonetheless...because this hardware is just REALLY junk. 4) Finally, as a corollary to #3, be careful when installing the fasteners with a battery drill (eg; into a wood table leg), or it will easily snap off. I generally don't use an impact drill for installing this sort of hardware, however in the case of the sheet metal screws supplied with this kit, but when you need to drive them into a wooden table leg for instance, you need to use something with more torque than a hand-held screwdriver. So make sure you drill an adequate pilot hole, and then really feather the drill trigger when driving the screws so as not to over-torque them. Any amount of heat in the screw from the friction of driving it into the material can cause these screws to just snap right off. Also, several of the bolts that came in the kit weren't threaded correctly--so it can be really easy to cross-thread the nylon lock nut on, and then the bolt will snap when you're tightening the nut. So buyer beware on these things. That said though--they seem to actually work OK (so far), but it does take a bit of extra precaution(s) during installation IMHO. Hope this helps others choosing this product.
