A good value
This is a nice pad for the money. It's very similar to the pad I'm replacing, which cost twice as much five years ago.The top fabric is heavy and tightly woven, and there's plenty of fluffy spun polyester for padding underneath. The sides are made of good quality stretchy fabric that I anticipate will hold up well. The pad is sized perfectly and can accommodate my thick pillowtop mattress without squishing the edges. The only reason I'm not giving the pad five stars is because the craftsmanship is less than great. Stitching is wavy and really crooked, and one of the seams is sewn funky. Looks funny but should be perfectly serviceable.I haven't washed the pad yet, but I'll update this review when I do.5/5/2009Well, the pad has been washed now, and it's still looking pretty good. I had to repair the funky seam, as it started unraveling. As much as I like the pad (especially the quality materials), I can't give it more than 4 stars. I would buy it again, anyways.5/31/2010The pad has been washed numerous times and is still looking good. It even survived an intensive chlorine-bleach session after the cat peed on it. The stretchy material is a little softer now and the filling isn't quite as fluffy as it used to be, but that's perfectly understandable considering the use (and abuse) the pad has been through. No tears in the material, no bunching, no pilling, no melting -- I'm still giving it a thumbs up.5/28/2013After four years of daily use and countless washings, the pad has finally met its demise. It was accidentally dried in a hot dryer, which melted the padding and caused it to start coming off in shreds. But that really was our fault, as there never was a problem when the pad was tumbled-dried on low heat.I think I'll order a new one.12/1/2017A few years ago, our first mattress pad was destroyed by a hot dryer. Oops. Now we’re extra-careful to use low heat when drying the pad.I liked the original pad well enough that I decided to replace it with an identical one. I’m glad that I did. It’s still going strong, 4.5 years later.

No Problem Washing Drying
After reading several reviews complaining of this item not washing and drying without problems, I was a little hesitant to buy it. But since the price and description seemed perfect, I took the plunge. As soon as it arrived, I took it out of the package, gave it a sniff, and it did have a slight plastic-like odor (probably from the clear plastic case in which it was packed). So I put it in the washing machine (frontloader) by itself (my pad is a king size), put in a normal dose of detergent, and washed it on "delicate." I did put it on a cycle that gave it an extra spin. After it finished washing, I put it in the dryer on low heat (as instructed on the sewn-on label) for 20 minutes. It was surprisingly close to dry when the cycle finished. But I gave it another similar cycle. When that was over, I found one more damp spot, and put the pad back in the dryer on the same 20 min low heat cycle, making sure that the damp spot was on the outside. After that finished, I put the pad on the bed, which it fit perfectly and smoothly. On the bed it is a little thicker than the old one, but I am guessing that it will flatten a bit. In any event, so far I am thrilled with it. The only reason I did not give it five stars was because I have not used it enough. If I discover anything significant, I will supplement this review. But if you follow my washing and drying procedures, I don't think you will have the problems some other reviewers complained about.

I like it! *Updated*
I bought this product for two reasons, the price, and the reviews. I was a little concerned about the reviews that said they dried the pad on low and the back melted. I have yet to dry it, which is why I rated it 4 stars for now. However, when it arrived I felt the quality was good. The stretchy fabric that wraps around the mattress is soft and very stretchy, much like spandex work out clothes. The padding is just the right amount, just enough for a comfortable cushion, but not too much either. The backing material on the bottom of the padding seemed to be cheap, but you don't see it or feel it anyway. For the price, this is a good quality mattress pad. Not great, but for $30+ it works.Update: pad lasted for about 9 years so I feel like that is sufficient for what I paid. However, once it develops a hole in the backing, do not use it. Cautionary tale here, or you may end up with a washing machine like pictured. To be fair the machine was not the best, but once you have a large piece of fabric like a mattress pad and it develops a hole that can hold water, you’re going to have a problem. So I won’t change my rating since this pad lasted almost 9 years, just know it’s probably a matter of time before the backing tears then I would recommend throwing it out at that point. Or you could be buying much more than a new mattress pad.

Buying our second set
We bought our first set of these mattress pads four years ago, based on positive reviews. After four years and three months of washing usually on warm (sometimes hot) with Borax and drying on medium (low is too low to get things dry in our dryer) there are two small tears on each pad. These look like the beginning of the end, not something reparable.Due to dustmite allergies we change sheets weekly and had two of these in order to have one in reserve. Considering that we gave them slightly rougher treatment than the care instructions indicated I'm pretty happy with how they have held up.The pad covers the mattress well and is a good thickness. The sides fit generously, just be careful pulling on them. It's easy to stick a fingernail through them or pull too hard on one spot. If you're careful, though, they can last the life of the pad.Due to some reviewers saying their pad melted in the dryer I was careful how I dried mine. I made sure it was right side out in the dryer since that side is cotton. I don't have a way to know if that helped but mine did not melt!
