Cedar Chest Hinge and Lid Support

I purchased these hinges for a box/chest slightly smaller than I would recommend for the size and load capacity of these hinges. Initially I was disappointed in their performance. They were very stiff and they rubbed on the sides of my box/chest. I didn't give up, though, I continued to work the hinges through their full range of motion over and over until I finally achieved a smooth, virtually frictionless action. These are, however, excellently crafted hinges, and I am very pleased with the results I eventually achieved on my box. The brass adds a deep, lustrous glimmer to the project.

I needed a template or something to show exact position of the hinge on the lid and box. It work out just fine.

Worked perfectly for the lid on a large toy chest I made for our granddaughter.

This product was advertised as fabricated specifically for a cedar chest, which is what I was going to use it for. The way it is made will work on a box where the underside of the top, when open, is in the same plane as the inside of the back of the box. I have never seen a cedar chest built this was. The top is usually hinged on the back of the box. Because of the way the hinge is made, you also cannot shim between the top and the hinge. This hinge is useless for this application. Also the company charged a premium of $12.26 above and beyond what they sell the same product for (minus the screws) on their website furnitureknowledge.com. Their customer service person told me I could return the hinges but I would still be out $16. I would not recommend buying any product from this supplier.

Ordered these hinges as replacement part for old chest. Excellent fit....replaced exactly. Holds quite a load in open position.

Given I'm not a master wood worker but.... I attached these to the inside of the toychest and used a level, then I extended the arms to drill pilot holes on the lid, screwed, drilled, and twisted the threaded metal attachment itme (Amazons filter blocks the shorter correct term) The lid wouldn't close all the way and it turns out the arms are digging into the sides of the toychest. I note there is a lot of play left to right in these hinges which is what I think is the root cause. So now my newly refinished chest has gouges where these hings wobble. it's done, I'm done, and now you know.

I have a chest with these hinges on it. The chest has been passed down from my wifes grandmother. They work as good as new. I made 4 chests ,1for each of my daughters. I expect them to hold up indefinitely.
