Cute book
I am a teacher moving to Tokyo. I had to have this book. It's full of great information and even teaches some Japanese. Amazon needs to learn how to send books in the same order with other items. My book arrived bent but they easily replaced it without needing to return.

Beautifully illustrated!
I used this book for “Around the world” theme! It helps the children get a glimpse of other parts of our world! Children need to learn of their own differences and then absorb others so they can understand!

Love It!
I bought this book a few years ago for my daughter. We aren't Japanese but we love Japan. My childhood friend was Japanese and this book brought back special memories for me. It explains so many traditions and holidays celebrated in Japan and even teaches you a little Japanese in the process. Since my daughter is a Girl Scout we used this book as an informational piece for our World Thinking Day booth last year. I would recommend this book for anyone who loves Japan and cute artsy illustrations.

Good book for lower grade kids - introducing Japanese culture
I purchased this book my daughter who was 6 years old at the time. She is half Japanese and we were going to visit her grandparents in the summer. I wanted to prep her for this trip to Japan and we read lots of books about Japan and Japanese culture. This was a very easy book and had lots of good information. I must say some of the pictures (drawings) were of very old Japanese life style and most of the people in Japan (unless you go to country side) don't live like that or don't have houses like that, but that's OK. This is just a learning tool. My daughter learned quite a bit and she taught herself some Kanji (Chinese character) from this book.

This book accomplishes a surprising amount in very few pages and words
My son will visit Japan for the first time next month, and I was looking for a way to teach him simple concepts that would help him organize his ideas and expectations about Japan. This book accomplishes a surprising amount in very few pages and words. While I appreciate the way the book directly addresses holidays and traditions, it's the subtle things that helped me to talk about cultural differences with my son. For example, the book mentions that the little girl will start second grade, and shows a picture of two second grade girls walking home from school alone. I pointed out to him that in Japan, the streets are safer, and children generally go places independently from a very young age. This both scared and excited him, and I promised that he could roam independently only when and as he felt comfortable. It's often the little things that we want and need to discuss with kids. This book has plenty of them.

Wonderful and detailed
Bought it as a gift for some friends and they absolutely loved it. Its detailed and very thought provoking for children, as well as interesting for adults. A great way to travel to Tokyo from the comfort of your sofa.

Great book with which to introduce children to Japan
This is a great book with which to introduce a child to Japan, things Japanese, and the Japanese language. The age range for enjoyment and enrichment is probably ages four through ten, which is unusual. This book will be read many times over, the art work is lovely, and it is an incredible buy.

Interessante...

Nice book !
My little girl ( 3y.o ) wanted a book about Japan , so I have ordered this and it was a very good choice ! We had lots of fun trying to pronounce the Japanese words on the book and to be honest I found myself very interested on the facts of Japanese daily life . It kept my little one's attention all through , it is full of details and I could see she did identify herself with Mimiko and her family , although we are not Japanese ourselves . Would recommend to anyone who wants a different fun book to read with their children or want to introduce the country to them !

This is a beautiful and informative book. My 6 year old particularly loves it and it's a great way of introducing a very different culture. He is now asking to visit Japan! Would highly recommend
