Maybe its my fault?

I was looking for an aluminium stand that would hold my ipad mini 3 in portrait mode but also allow it to charge at the same time. I had an Anker stand before but never thought about having to charge it while it was in portrait mode, but it became a real hassle to keep it in landscape. So I bought this one to be able to charge it while it stood upright and it does that. But here are the 2 biggest gripes I have with it that made me give it 3 stars.1) One thing I liked about the Anker one was that it was collapsable. It was easy to stick it in the side of my backpack or bag without being too much trouble. I didnt think about this problem until I tried to bring this with my one time and realized how oddly shaped it is to put in a bag. Its not collapsable or anything so its stuck in that odd shape and may be uncomfortable to put in a backpack and/or will not be space efficient in a work bag. So theres that.2) Weight. Another reason I loved the Anker one was that it represented its name well.....Anker (anchor). The thing had a nice heft to it that it was very sturdy and I felt totally comfortable putting my ipad mini on it. Though this iClever says it could be used for tablets, I think it was mainly made for smart phones. I've had my ipad sitting on it and any slight bump into the table or the ipad itself would send the thing tumbling. I saw people's reviews say theyre ipad sits nicely on it. I have an ipad MINI and this person had a full size ipad standing comfortably on this? No way. This is way too small to sit an ipad comfortably. Yes an ipad will fit, but it is not sturdy with such a heavy device.PROs:Now although those 2 Cons are very prominent to me and make me not really like the product, I have to give it some props for still doing the job I wanted it to do.1) Holes for cables. While Im not always comfortable leaving my ipad on it in fear of it tipping over, I do use it every now and then in portrait mode and love that I can finally charge it while Im doing that. Thats the #1 reason I bought this and the holes are nicely placed.2) Build quality. Even though its annoying to carry around because of its odd shape and is not collapsable, it is made of aluminium and has a nice clean finish on it. The rubber grips dont scratch my phone or ipad, and the hinge that houses the swiveling holder is VERY strong. Even a full size ipad wont make the hinge move. The angle you choose is the exact angle you get (if you can balance a giant ipad on it that is....).3) Works best for a phone.Overall. It is a good product that does what its made to do. However, it should specify that it is MAINLY for phones. I would recommend buying a bigger one for tablets/ipads. This thing is just too light and too small to comfortably hold an ipad. But maybe I shouldve gotten a bigger one myself? I specifically wanted a small holder that was the same size as my Anker. My Anker was small but was as sturdy as a brick. This thing knocks over way too easily.

Really Clever and Sturdy Phablet Holder. Could be improved for small tablets.

I was looking for a stand that would hold up my two tablets, a Samsung Galaxy Tab E 8.0 and LG G Pad F 8.0. I have thin TPU cases on each and was wondering if this well-reviewed stand would hold them or would be "tippy" as some suggested.First, they are built and finished really well and feel like they could last indefinitely. Hinge on the part that holds the phone is very smooth in operation yet not too loose so it holds phones and tablets well. Smaller phones like iPhone 5s and large-ish Samsung Note 3 are held fine although the larger they get, in portrait mode, the higher they are above the hinge. See my photo of a Note in landscape vs. the LG in Portrait mode to compare. This means if you interact with a large phone/tablet that extends above the hinge and press anywhere on them anywhere above the hinge, it could tip the base backwards. So what I did was to change where the hinge was relative to the base. As you can see by my photos, the stand on the right of each picture is the original angle the hinge stands above the actual base. In the left-most stand you can see that I bent the angle a little more forward and this improved the stability and this works better but is still not ideal for the portrait mode of the tablet. While not perfect (the larger tablets still are better in landscape mode) it did make the iClever better at resisting being tipped over if you pressed on a phablet high above the hinge. If you look at how much black is showing in the LG portrait stand, you can see that even with this very slight modification, it is too top heavy. All in all however, the value is very good. With some simple improvement in either angle, or center of gravity, or a deeper base (front to back) the already good stand could be really excellent and more versatile.

Okay not great

Smaller than I expected , first arrived with a really bent hinge although the package was undammaged. I contacted the company from the package insert, they did promptly send a replacement. The arms that hold the phone or tablet are not very deep, my phone doesn't sit securely in them when it is in the case. It would be fine if I did t use a case. You can see what I mean in the photo. The arms should be deeper. The first stand had a rubber pad, like the product shown, the replacement didn't. I don't think it's sturdy enough for a tabletI update because their customer service is excellent. They contacted me, took care of my issues. The arms still could be deeper, but it holds my iphone and looks nice on my desk. I you are looking for a stand for you phone, I would certainly consider this unit.

I guess I should have paid more attention to the ...

I guess I should have paid more attention to the product description; I had been looking at a few different similar products before ordering. In the end, it's well built, however it doesn't work so well with my iPad in an Otterbox case (iPad Air2 in Otterbox Agility Shell). The tablet doesn't sit flat against the back of the stand, it's kinda wedged in there. It also appears to be a hair too much weight for it, as the tension on the hinge can barely keep the tablet in place; if I touch the tablet, the mount moves causing the tablet to fall forward or backwards.I had purchased this item to hold the tablet in landscape mode on my desk when I'm using DuetDisplay on the iPad (Lets me use iPad as a second display on Mac or Windows). It'll work, it's just a bit more delicate than I was hoping for. Ideally, the back of the stand should come up past the half way point on the back of the tablet, which it does not.
