The knife guards seem fine, but I didn't get the length they're advertising. I put my 10" carving knife in and the point slipped right out the front, cutting me badly. The whole reason I ordered this set is that they show a picture of a guard longer than 10". That's not what I got, see picture.UPDATE: 1/28/21I received a whole other shipment from today, with the appropriate sized guards. So now I have an extra steel as well. Upgrading to 5 stars.

I ordered this to cover an 8 inch chef knife from JA Henckel (classic) and it fits wonderfully and looks nice too. I was looking at a knife gaurd but this has 2 guards and a sharpening rod for only a little more, so it's a much better deal. Additionally, each of these is felt lined so it feels like luxury! I don't know what's so special about those gaurds that are selling at $6 each because this hugs the knife and won't fall off in your cabinet, which is, I'm assuming, what you are looking for with these.Now, I gave this 4 stars only because I received two 8.5 inch gaurds when it seems to be advertised as one 10 inch gaurd and one 8 inch. Since I only wanted the 8 inch chef gaurd for now this isn't a big deal for me, but if you're buying this for the 10 inch one I would say order with caution as I don't know if you'll get that.

Once I got over my fear of using this, it worked great. The knife I sharpened had a few "chips" out of the edge, 8 passes on each side brought the blade back to factory sharp.

Solidly built and very effective. It's a great way to keep all the kitchen knives ready for use. A few passes before prepping food makes cutting and chopping a pleasure.I would add that it could require a bit of practice and experience to get consistent passes and understand knife edge angles. If you haven't used a sharpener like this before, start with the instructions and focus on the right angle consistent passes.

The black bag to hold the honing steel is torn at the bottom. The plastic casing that surrounds the honing rod was broken off from the portion that surrounds the top of the handle with the snap to hold it in place. The rod itself is fine.
