Completely Unexpected
The trailer is a tiny light compared to the blazing fire this movie actually is.To call it a version of "fantasy island for white maniacal serial killer/rapists/", quoting one of the people I watched it with, would take away the lengthy sociopsychological historical essay this movie deserves.Coming from a beautiful biracial family, we've had discussions about just how many of our African brothers and sisters who's relatives were stolen or bought, sailed across an ocean into a nightmare as dark and deep as the concentration camps of Nazi Germany, how many still have genetic nightmares where they are back hundreds of years ago worked to death, raped, impregnated, starved, treated like less then nothing, murdered, to wake up to morning light of 2020 in a deep sweat thanking God it was just a nightmare. If you think something like this couldn't happen today, you are dead wrong. The hatred of the Klan, named different things these days but still made up of white supremacists who want to go back to the 'good ol days' NOT HAPPENING, have grown in number year by year since the a dip in the 80's and 90's. It's resurgence is everywhere. To this day , the descendants and new recruits to the white supremacy organizations, raise each of their white generation on pure hatred toward anything "impure" and of a different ethnicity with melanin. This country was NEVER about the illusion of a American Dream. It was taken by white men with wigs and guns wiping out over 3/4 of the continent's aboriginal native cultures and built by slaves whipped and tortured and raped for hundreds of years while the fat white confederacy built a society on so much shed blood, violence, and sins, it could never have become the dream so many civil rights workers and leaders were murdered for. The simple truth is that white people taught only hatred toward the color of skin, know only that hatred, and they're growing in number ever since the dream came true that when we finally had a biracial president elected.Veronica is strong willed and determined, and wipes out the hateful whites on a planet that should have always been evolving spiritually forward instead of becoming more and more soulless and foul.Spoiler:In the end we find that the Past of Plantations bleeds just miles inside the off limits section of a forest where operates a Reenactment amusement park where they reenact the civil war. The absolute fanatic racism and hatred of the father and mother team who kidnap people of color and transport them to their made up plantation where they hold them captive, burn them to ash, and have clients who come on down to enjoy the savagery for a hefty fee for mostly young white supremacist idiots who have the money to pay to mistreat and rape the "slaves".Like my friend said, it could simply be dismissed by whites as a "fantasy island" for racists, but it can't and doesn't. There is so much psychological terror in this movie bringing to light the raw and brutal reality of this country's upbuilding on the backs, bodies, blood, and bones of African slaves who's systematic murder to this day continues. The only difference is their chains are psychological and their murders are no longer hidden but recorded on iphones for the world to see what an ugly country this truly is. When you build a society on a foundation of absolute violence and murder of millions, demolishing the natural order of the land, one day it will rip open and spill all that blood back on the future. And that is what's happening in 2020. Whatever comes let it come. Enough is enough. Don't ever let them take your breath away again. I could go deeply into the different dynamics of the various systems that created this movie but no, you do that, it's your responsibility to experience it for yourself. Written by GERARD BUSH AND CHRISTOPHER RENTZ , I think this was their first script and direction so you can dismiss some of it's stumbles, what you can't dismiss is the FACT that racism is alive and growing in The Land Of Tears and Home of the Enslaved by this country's history the second Columbus put his footprint on the ground. Sometimes, sins committed hundreds or a thousand years ago WILL return to demand retribution and it will TAKE IT. RETRIBUTION TO BOTH the descendants of the slaves dragged here and retribution to the indigenous people from who's this continent was torn. There are a thousand and more elements to take from this film. I PRAY YOU WATCH IT WITH OPEN MINDS, HEARTS, AND SOULS, AND FEEL THAT PAIN, THAT TERROR, AND KNOW IT IS FACT!!!!!!!!!

A thought provoking, powerful film with a twisted reality
It has been a few weeks since we watched Antebellum, spending time both thinking about and talking about this film. My wife and I had wanted to see it in the theater (thanks, Covid), since we first spotted it in previews. We finally got a chance and came away... disturbed, angry, thrilled, blow away... we usually consider a film good if it makes us think and gives us much to discuss following, and this one has had us doing just that. In fact, it took us days before we could even do that. In fact, we thought it something else from those previews than it turned out to be, but fine with that change. In fact, we’d thought it more a time bending horror flic rather than the all-too-terrifyingly real possibility.Antebellum is the kind of movie that at once causes you to reel in horror and wonder, why are we still talking about this - why haven’t we changed? Without going into the story and dropping any spoilers, this is the story of a woman slave and the powerful ways she gets there, gets through, and seeks her freedom. The acting is great - Janelle Monae has become a favorite actress for my wife and I and are blown away by everything this young woman does. You cannot take your eyes off her - she is electric, powerful, and one of the most naturally talented actresses I have ever seen. There are moments here where her character takes a step over the top - but we continue to discuss: was this an acting choice, directorial, or perfect for what is happening? Gabourey Side is a charmer as Dawn, but one of the ‘weak spots’ as well: again, we cannot decide if it’s an acting choice, directing, or perfect for the story when she tells off a stranger in the bar. And Jena Malone (who I recognized but couldn’t put my finger on it (Step Mom)) was also outstanding, but again... were those over the top moments... you get the picture. There are moments where we just were not sure and at once it annoyed us, but also pushed a number of deep discussions since. This is not a pretty story, but one that asks us to ask questions, consider things, and look at uncomfortable possibilities and realities. No spoilers, but let’s just say, it made is think and feel. The ending was excellent in that we felt Edan (Monae) was avenged and did something we wish so many more could have... it is powerful, thought provoking, and made us cheer. Antebellum is a good film. It is not a perfect film. It has weaknesses. But we are both certain we will watch it again, if only to ask more questions and pick it apart to find answers - as a film, story, and more.
