Disappointing
So, a few problems.First: just to complain a little about how terrible Amazon filtering still is. Maniac Cop and Maniac Cop 2 are mixed together for coding reasons. There a ton of movies like this, and if you're just watching digital movies it just mixes in the reviews for that together with Blu Ray and DVD so reviews are all over the place. So, what I'm saying is: it's 2020. The world is now run by corona virus, Amazon and Walmart. However, no matter how big the internet is now, and how much we ignore everyone else to look at it at all times, it's still a broken mess of code that hasn't been updated since 1998. If you've never seen a movie before, especially a series like this (that I personally heard about for years but only got around to watching now), check reviews on rotten tomatoes or... anywhere else first. the reviews on Amazon are scattershot and not even always about the same movie or distribution type. It's completely insane.Anyway, that has no effect on my review score (which is meaningless anyway because even the ones who say these movies are boring gave it at least 4 stars!).I've watched the first and 2nd Maniac Cop now and I do not see what all the fuss is about. Ya, Bruce Campbell is in both (although, minor spoiler, mostly in the first- barely in the second), but he adds nothing to the series. This is first Evil Dead Bruce Campbell. He's very dry, has no bravado at all yet, and hasn't found himself. He's very boring and uninteresting which is how he's written anyway so it's not entirely his fault to begin with.I get why people who saw these movies at the time like them, but seeing it for the first time now I just don't feel these movies hold up. The kills are bland, the mystery is a minor part of the story (and not very well written anyway), and the story is too simple. The acting doesn't matter (it shouldnt in a movie like this), but overall it just doesn't hold up.The idea is incredibly solid- it's almost a crime procedural where a slasher killer (similar to Michael Meyers or Jason in paranormal ability to survive) is dressed like a cop and going around killing people. There are reasons for this given (and it's told and retold and retold so you don't forget why he's a maniac cop), but it's just bland the way it's delivered.Again, I do actually think it's a really fun slasher villain idea, but the way it's ultimately produced leaves a lot to be desired. I don't feel it lives up to the potential.Robert Z'Dar is the best part of these films and it's a shame everyone forgets he did these movies. I never see anyone mention that. There's a reason he was in Tango and Cash, Killing American Style or Samurai Cop (even if most movies he's in were bad). I'd argue some amount of that has to be these movies- which to be clear these Maniac Cop films are not "bad" movies. These are actually decently technically proficient.I do feel these movies are a good case for remakes, though. I always felt that a good remake is a movie that has potential but doesn't live up to that potential. These were never huge films either so it would make sense to think up something if the slasher thing was still popular (which I feel like it's waned a lot in the past several years so maybe not right now).Anyway, a great idea that doesn't fully deliver. At least not in 2020.

Some senseless fun
The first Maniac Cop tried to change up the usual serial killer story by having a policeman go after innocent people. This time they added the hardboiled detective to the mix with the main character Robert Davi. Bruce Campbell also made his return as a policeman but he was only at the start of the film unfortunately. Plus this time the maniac cop is going after other cops. It’s all a bunch of senseless fun.

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT FOREVER (if you dismiss this film)
Manic Cop 2 is a very good sequel to the original film and still holds up today. In fact I would say it's better today than it was on a it's release. Both movies are. The thing is some people I know turn their noses up when I mention the film's or see if they have watched them. In all cases these narrow minded folk have NEVER watched any Maniac Cop film because they wrongly assume they are rubbish. How wrong they are and how they have and are missing out. The Manic Cop films are brilliant examples of cult status. They have a certain look and play certain way they makes them stand out. And that's the whole point. The story is played serious, the violence is hard and the charterers, especially in the second film, have a noir style. The budget and sets make no apologies but that's part of the charm. So if you have not seen these great films or simply forgotten you liked them, then it's time to revisit on Blu-ray. And there are some great insightful special features on both. I'm not sure about Manic Cop 3 yet as I have that on order. What would be brilliant would be a Nicolas Cage remake. That needs to happen.
