Great music from the guy who would inspire a generation of musicians to come, Woody Guthrie
This is a great collection of Woody Guthrie's music. Included is his most famous song, "This Land Is Your Land", a response to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America." His other songs are not as well known, but are sung from the heart and can captivate the listener.Guthrie wrote many folk and children's songs, as well as numerous ballads. This is a wonderful sampling of Guthrie's library of songs. The recordings are from some time ago so don't have quite the fidelity of recent recordings. Yet, the sound here is quite good.Woody Guthrie is a guy who wrote a group of inspirational songs that would influence important musicians to be. Songwriters including Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Pete Seeger, and Jerry Garcia were all influenced by Guthrie. This collection provides the opportunity to hear the original music that acted as the inspiration for the upcoming generation of musicians. If you enjoy music, this is a collection that helps complete the puzzle of how American music got its sound.Great lyrics, music, and emotion from a guy who would change the course of U.S. music.

Ultimate?
I guess we need to redefine ultimate. It's Woody Guthrie. That is great. The songs we are all familiar with. But which song versions? Recorded when and by who? Are these variations or Library of Congress? Are these leased Mo Asch recordings? No notes what so ever worth a tinkers ...whatever. The notes are clearly aimed at a (probably) British or European novice audience who knows nothing about Woody or American Folk music. There is more information about Lonnie Donnegan and Bruce Sprinstein than the origin of these recordings. The music is fine. Some strange editing here and there and fade in and out, but not being sure about when or where or whose recordings these are it's hard to know what's going on and whether that was intended, the result of time constraints in recording methods of the day or are they just condensed. They will now be set aside for the Asch and Lomax recordings until they are identified. Make a perfect re-gifting idea for someone unfamiliar but interested in Woody's music.

ABOUT: Woody Guthrie - THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION
This CD Is Fabulous! If anybody says "they aren't a lover of Folk Music" ...Well, if they're a TRUE AMERICAN, they should at least be moved by "This Land Is Your Land," "Buffalo Gals," "Blow The Man Down," or at least one of the 50 songs found on this collection.I felt it good to have because it's HISTORY. It's where great common songs our country sings came from.

Missing ending on "This Land Is Your Land".
Get the "The Asch Recordings, Vol. 1-4" instead.

Woody Guthrie - The Ultimate Collection: "Bound for Glory"
Woody' voice shows "hard Traveling" he has done -- great music ... :) Woody's son, Arlo Guthrie) sings may of the same songs as Woody but Arlo (Of Alice Resturant fame) has a more melodic voice to my ear, but I love them both and hve much of the music ....

Relaxes me
Feel uptight? Listen to some depression era music it will calm your soul. May be trouble on the horizon but we have it pretty good right now.

As important now as then
If you play acoustic guitar and/or care at all about those who live on the other side of the 1%, then listen to Woody. If you enjoy reading Bill O'Reilly's "Killing" series, then listen to Sean Hannity instead. Woody Guthrie's music will only disturb you and cause you to question your otherwise peaceful, proper life. Woody offers hope, solace and dignity for those of us who are struggling.
