You can see from the side by side photos that this simply does NOT fit the NV 42 without a major overhaul. The entire vacuum has to be taken apart and split in half to get at the screw holding in the top bracket of the old hose. No way around that so far as I could see. Then you have to carefully dig the old hose out so as not to destroy the plastic female threads. The old hose is quite firmly glued in and does not just unscrew. Possibly a hair dryer or acetone could make digging out the glue easier. Once you get that done you can unsrew the cap off this new one and screw the hose into the old top bracket and re-assemble. When you are done and find a spring on the floor you have to take it all apart again, put the spring in, then re-assemble.... again. Hint the spring attaches to the dog which the canister release button moves, I will help you that far! Yes they do sell these on ebay, but they are all used.

It fit perfectly and now our vacuum sucks again.

This hose is maybe 6 inches long. It is not a replacement for the original vacuum hose.

Purchased this product because it was the only one I found that stated it worked for the shark Nv42 model. It does work but the end part that hooks to the vac head is longer than what the picture represents, which was the reason I purchased. It kinks when the vacuum head is not engaged. Anybody looking for a hose for the same model I would advise you to not pay more because the cheaper ones are the same. Save some money and purchase the cheaper alternatives.
