a greatest hits compilation that doesn't reduce a group's history to ...
Finally, a greatest hits compilation that doesn't reduce a group's history to 12 or even 10 selections. This 2CD set appropriately titled "the singles +" is required for anyone who doesn't have their vinyl in its entirety. The 41 singles here includes all their tops of the pops biggest hits and plenty of other great tunes to tie them all together.Other notes:1) some songs seem a little different from the way I recall them from my childhood (and so what?).2) this is definitely NOT remastered, which is a good thing in some respects, because I am certainly convinced of their legitimacy. However, I would still buy a new mastering of the music, since Burdon's voice can sound a little strained and "screechy" at times.I'll stand by my 5-star rating, mostly because "the singles+" fills a long gap in my music collection that was way overdue. My copy, compilation by BRMusic, made in Holland, 1999.RECOMMENDED

Original Mono Recordings
A great compilation of early Animals in mono. The sound quality is clear and sounds good through Bose speakers. Also from my knowledge you're getting all the original takes of the songs. You're NOT getting the US Version of "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" but the original version! Just hearing that was a relief in questioning if these were original takes. Get this! A good staring point for anyone new to The Animals.

Desert Island Discs.
Have you ever played that game with your friends--suppose you were shipwrecked on a desert island--suppose ( somehow ) there was electricity and a CD system--if you could only have 10 or 20 CDs, which ones would you choose ? Well--for "baby boomers" like me, here are two discs that qualify. This is without question the ultimate collection of hits--and great "B" sides--of the Animals, and Eric Burdon. It is the most beautiful import from Holland since the tulip !In North America, it was called the "British Invasion"--in Britain, the "Beat Boom". The Beatles' international success opened the door for many other UK groups, and the R & B-influenced Animals--the pride of Newcastle--were easily one of the best. " The House of the Rising Sun " is surely one of the greatest singles of all time, and with Eric's powerful, earthy voice , many other hits would follow. They are all included in this package. It should be noted that their early hits were all produced by Mickie Most, who passed away earlier this year. The Animals' fine keyboard player, Alan Price, left the band after a few hits--I seem to recall that Alan didn't like flying--but went on to forge a successful career in music on his own. A terrific singer/songwriter himself, Alan's talent can be enjoyed through a wonderful, two-disc anthology called "Geordie Boy", released in 2002.The Animals went through various personnel changes over the years, with the occasional "reunion" tour. Their induction into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame was much-deserved. Some of the 60s British groups sound dated today, but the Animals' music remains exciting and vital.A couple of years ago, I saw Eric perform at the annual Ottawa Bluesfest, with a group of younger musicians known as the "New Animals". Well--Eric is no "oldies act" ! Of course, he did many of his hits, but his voice is as strong and dynamic as ever and the Ottawa crowd loved him !So--if you are trying to decide which Animals collection to buy, don't hesitate. This is it ! 41 tracks--2 generously-filled CDs--and very reasonably priced. Can I give it 6 stars ?

Some of my favorites...
One day I decided to find the music I loved and grew up to so specifically went looking it... Eric Burdon and the Animals, Jim Morrison and the Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Sweetwater, Fleetwood Mac, Creedance Clearwater and Jerry Riopelle to name a few (I already had all of Led Zeppelin, the Beatles and the Stones).. I'm no expert when it comes to sound quality (unless it's really crappy). I just like what I like and between the words bubbling up from the recesses of my mind and my concert memories floating around in my head, I'm transported back to another place and time while I'm doing the dishes or cleaning the house. Talk about a great anchor for the best of times! I'm happy!

Awesome!
I discovered the Animals via the Ramones cover of When I Was Young on their Acid Eaters cover album. The song particuarly struck me and I looked up the original version. Already being a fan of much 60s rock I wondered how I ever managed to look over this band. After doing some research this seemed like the best collection to get started with. The sound quality is quite good. All the songs are clear and are not mastered too loudly like a lot of modern music & reissues of older music.Fans of The Rolling Stones will enjoy this band, the sound is fairly similar, but still unique (both bands started out in 1962, with the Animals hailing from Newcastle upon Tyne, and the Stones from London).
