Do I need to purchase a box spring with this mattress?

You don't need to, but you may want to for aesthetic reasons. The mattress just needs a consistent surface underneath, so if you're using a bed frame that lifts the mattress off of the ground, you'll need a sturdy platform or foundation. Some people put their mattresses straight on the floor. It's a different look, but it works fine. A bit of a side note, I have read other manufacturers recommending to *not* use a box spring with actual springs in it, which most modern box springs (or foundations) don't anyway.

Mattress is only 9” out of box. Does it expand to 14 inches?

What does the mattress smell like when it comes in the door? Some of these foam mattresses have a horrible smell for the first week or two. Will this?

Mine had no smell. I removed it from the box and put it on the metal base I bought late one Friday afternoon and was able to sleep on it that night. Great mattress!

I was initially sceptical of purchasing this mattress. I never owned a foam mattress. However, after a week of sleeping on it my wife and I absolutely love it. King size came in a small convenient box. Super easy set up. Cut the seal and plastic and the mattress expands. Went to sleep an hour later (after install) to a great night sleep. I am very impressed. Twenty year warranty to boot. I even bought one as a gift for our adult daughter. She also loved it. No problems at all with this mattress. I would highly recommend.
