Ephemeral Perfection
A word or two of context.Art Nouveau, also known as Jugendstil, was in many ways the final flourish of a European culture of hand crafted art that survived the pit of the dark ages but was not able to survive the ravages of the cruel 20th Century with its totalitarianism and military industrial complexes. It was on many levels the collective expression of hundreds of artists, artisans, poets, architects, actors, models, an organic evolution of a feminine ideal of beauty that was, however evanescently, realized in the moments before that generation of artists went off to meet their untimely demise in the trenches of the first World War. So many real lives were lost, and their style itself has become a symbol for what the world might have been if not...Auteurs Roman Polanski and Dario Argento are both acutely aware of the beauty of Art Nouveau and each, in their own way, has used its aesthetic to accentuate their own expressions of cinematic woe, and I doubt either would begrudge the clear fact Hélène Cattet, along with Bruno Forzani and an amazing ensemble cast, has captured and even resurrected the essence of Jugendstil in all its tragic aesthetic in a way that neither male director ever did or ever could, while at the same time paying a wonderful and loving homage to those who have explored this dark, sensuous Fin de Siécle world before her.You won't get it all on your first viewing. I've watched it at least four times now and am still discovering new things, like the split second early on in the film when a door slams and Klaus Tange's image for a split second turns into a black abyss in the voluptuous, tropical palette of the background that makes every moment of this perfectly realized work of horror art a sumptuous feast for the eye, mind and soul.

Cool experimentation mixed into a completely boring story.
All told this film is just not worth the time. It has some nice sequences in between absolutely stretched out areas of the film that bore me to tears. I didn't care about any of the characters, it's completely incoherent for half its runtime, and overall the frenetic shots of eyes, knife sounds, and other random experimentation starts to become too much of a hassle. Even creative films can have clear or at least somewhat concise storytelling. This one is a sleeper, literally. Fair warning.

Colorful and Strange film...
I purchased the DVD of this film hoping a second viewing would finally clear some things up. However, I came away feeling more uncertain than the first time I saw it. I fear I will never truly understand this one; and possibly that is the objective of its creators. All I can say is this film is more Giallo than Giallo itself.

Do you like to feel uncomfortable?
There aren't really good words to describe this film. I would just recommend it to anyone who enjoys creepy psychological horror that makes you extremely uncomfortable. I purchased this on a whim not having heard of it before and I enjoy it so much I recommend it to everyone who likes weird scary uncomfortable movies.

See it!
It's refreshing to know there's still a few artists around. I was hooked and transfixed the entire time. This film won't reveal itself to you, but it will speak to your soul if you're willing to listen.

Art House Horror
Surrealistic, atmospheric and beautifully filmed. This movie is not going to appeal to most people, as it is not a simple straightforward horror film with a easy-to-follow plot.

This product is very good. There aren't any special features but it all looks great, that being said the film itself is a little weird. It isn't a direct narrative and gives a lynchian level of advante garde. It isn't not a great movie but is worth seeing, but maybe not buying.

Their followup to Amer, which is also awesome. Excellent stabs of perfectly-executed humor percolate through a disorienting sexual spider and fly mystery brimming with genius filmmaking. The editing in both of their features so far is completely to die for (not to mention every other aspect as well).

A visual stunner but without the mystique of their debut feature, Amer (2009).
What we have here regarding Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani's second feature, Strange Color of Your Body's Tears aka L'étrange couleur des larmes de ton corps (2013) is a five star visual and sound feast, however unlike their début feature, Amer (2009) it lacks the richness of storytelling which Amer masterfully and descriptively impressed at offering us. The same fascinating visual mechanics of what these combined visionary directors like to offer is often mysterious, compelling even and their second offering 'Strange Color of Your Body's Tears' in that respect is again resplendent both visually and with their use of fabulous sound atmospherics that in coordination ooze from the screen in breathtaking tandem. Do not mistaken my overall reluctance to compare this piece with its predecessor as laziness but simply put, Amer as the full package worked on every experimental and conceived cinematic platform, including its evident bow to other great and influential genre directors which Cattet and Forzani seemed at pains to honour in Amer and to be fair have again lovingly maintained over their two outings thus far. What this effort lacks in its scale and duration and despite its strange intrigue, is unfortunately its larger reliance on its deep routed avant garde workmanship which becomes slightly more overpowering than its true essence in attempting to be a modern Giallo example; as Amer most certainly defined and achieved. S.C.O.Y.B.T's in large part works and the violence and the dreamscapes within the design of the story are still polished and quite splendid in brash visualisation and this watermark is now truly established regarding these two directors and their combined work. This mystery thriller/horror/whodunnit is enjoyable and at times genuinely holds the viewers emotional psyche in what is a subject matter that expands into an almost illusionary, hypnotic fuelled nightmare within a nightmare. This is what Cattet and Forzani seem supreme at being able to transfer to the screen. The depth of what made Amer such a spellbinding event and a modern homage to the traditions of horror cinema though present here i may add, doesn't quite match up with the whole fresh experience that came of Amer. S.C.O.Y.B.T as a stand alone production is vast and again is not without a strong horror presence. The only problem with this effort is that after watching Cattet and Forzani's début we perhaps expected them to bring something even further and original to the table and again to a point this film offers that ingredient, however and despite the look and feel of this particular offering, it seemed compelled to be more of the same in creation despite only being different in context of what I myself believed to be at times a somewhat more convoluted even drawn out affair. For that reason and simply that alone instead of the five star quality I bestow of their first work Amer, I have to concede that on this particular occasion, though this film offers much, it lacks its predecessors magic touch and perhaps even our expectations of what these two directors as a unit could achieve as a follow on was perhaps our problem as the viewer and not the inventiveness of two fine visionaries of modern horror cinema. If you like unusual, slow pace film with an artistic and colourful spread then 'Strange Color of Your Body's Tears' will impress as a first viewing - the only dilemma here is these directors have already broke genre boundaries with my much preferred Amer.
