New to ASA...GET THIS BOOK NOW! Want to learn ASA command line...GET THIS BOOK NOW!
I recently moved into a group where we managed ASAs via cli. First off I was new to the ASA and we don't use the gui. I understood the concept of firewalls, but had no practical experience aside from on a Netscreen via the gui. I was able to muddle my way through some simple ACL changes and often asked my teammates for help. I had taken an online course on the ASA, but it was gui based. I was reading the Cisco online docs, and although the information is there, it's a lot to wade through. I wanted a book I could reference and that was organized, and wasn't 1000 pages. I was very happy when I ran across this and ordered it. When I received it, after flipping through the table of contents, I was kicking myself for not having looked for something like this book sooner. The chapters on ACL and NAT were EXACTLY what I had been working on. I immediately jumped into those chapters and could apply what I read the next day at work. The author truly has thought about what you need to know now, and gives it to you in small digestible bits to get you configuring your ASA via the command line NOW! He doesn't go over the gui, doesn't go over the history of firewalls and he doesn't repeat himself. As he mentions, there is no fluff. It's a straightforward and unlike the online Cisco docs, won't put you to sleep after a page or two. After I got through the ACL and NAT chapters, I started on the VPN chapters which was the second most often thing we were tasked with doing. The chapter on SSL VPN was EXACTLY what I needed about a week previous to me getting the book. The issue he described in the book by using the self-signed cert of the ASA, is exactly what I went through with the customer who wondered because of the warning messages if the VPN was secure. I can't say enough good things about this book. It is worth all 5 stars. If you want to learn command line on the ASA, look no further.

I really like this book and wish he would make something like a portable guide book. I also would like a new edition that just give s the 8.3 and later commands. Gets frustrating that the older commands are there when I just want to see the 8.3 commands I understand why they are there but would like to have them eliminated so its just a little less confusing.

precise, and worth every penny
I'm currently learning for my CCNA exam and I've bought this copy in needs of configuring and managing my new ASA firewall at home. This book gave me a broad view of old ASA (8.3 and prior) and also the ASA 8.4 or even 9.x. The writing is really clear with detail explanation for every command with real-life scenarios. In my opinion, if you are network administrator and want to learn about cisco firewall, this book is a must.Furthermore, you can go the Author website which is [...], you can find a good deal with VPN configuration manual, and ASA firewall with good price. Harris is really nice and friendly guy, and he gave me the discount because I bought the hard copy already. Thanks Harris, and I'm on my way to CCNA security now.

Well-written and Organzied Information
I've read about a third of this book so far. It is well written and easy to follow. I particularly like the way the author laid out the examples with the pre version 8.3 right before the post version 8.3. This works out very well for me as I am well-versed in the earlier ASA OS and this helps me quickly relate how the new format compares to the old format. But beyond that, there is a wealth of easy to understand information to gather for anyone new to Cisco firewalls. I highly recommend this book.

Such an excellent book. Before the book
Such an excellent book. Before the book, I struggled to find a good materiel that would explain to me in easy to understand language on how NAT works for example; different scenarios, and implementations, after reading the chapter, I can finally say that understand how it works and how to implement NAT within specific network. I can't wait to read rest of the book but so far, it's been extremely useful.

Written for people who need to get up and running.
I inherited a Cisco 5505 in need of configuration. I had worked with routers before, but the ASAs have a bit of a learning curve to them. This book skips a lot of the theoretical and puts real world configurations in front of you with real world explanations. It doesn't touch some of the more complicated options, but it will get you up and running and give you a solid base from which to build.

Great guide
I bought this book specifically to help with the migration from my ASA 5520's to the new 5525X's. It was used more as a reference than as a detailed command line guide but it did both quite well. I found the writing remarkably easy to read and very clear and concise. The illustrations were clear , helpful, and well detailed. I would definitely recomend this book

Great coverage of all the main areas
Probably a book to read after gaining some experience with ASA, it goes pretty deep but the thing I liked more is the extensive coverage of the topics and features. After this book, it shouldn't be hard to delve in any advanced topic autonomously.
