My Family's Changing: Helping Kids Understand Divorce and Family Change

I purchased this book along with, Why Don't We Live Together Anymore (which is also a great book) And I looked into other books like Dinosaur Divorce, etc. However many bits of it were too graphic (ie: drugs, alcohol, etc. and the illustrations were also very angry. This book is really speaks from a child's point of view and breaks it down so that a child even as young as 4yrs old can understand and relate to what the book is talking about. I also believe it is a good book for parents because it really does give you insight on what your child is or will be going through. I highly recommed this book for anyone with a child going through a divorce.

I split from my ex wife in 2010, I bought this book last summer. It is an excellent book that helps children understand why they feel the way they do about the change of their parents splitting up that has occurred in their lives. That it is ok to be sad or mad. Reminds them divorce is not their fault that they will always be loved by both parents. I just recently read it again to my 7 & 9 yr old boys. It is a good book to read over & over again.

My neighbor is going through a change and has a young family, it is a nice book and you can read it sit down with kids and talk to them.

Two years later and my children still ask me to read this book to them. The book helps you ask your children questions so they can express their feelings or concerns, or even ask you questions they may have been afraid to ask. It does a wonderful job of explaining complicated things such as court dates and the judge in a simple manner and how each parent may change or act. As my children grow older, they understand more and more of the book. (My children are now 4, 6). Another book I would recommend is Mommy & Daddy Bear's Divorce which is particularly useful if the mother has primary residential custody.

After reading this book my daughters relief was palpable! The questions helped open up conversations that was difficult for her or I to put to words. Very child relatable and written extremely well for both parents and children. I would highly recommend this for 5-8 yo kids. It helped my kids come to a better understanding of what is happening and what they could expect.

I found this book to be an extremely effective resource for parents and children. My only suggestion would be for the author to put out a duplicate with a male custodial parent. As we all know, mothers do not always get custody. Many fathers are being awarded custody. It would be beneficial to have a male parent version of this book.

I am a child counselor and bought this for my practice to read with some of my kids dealing with divorce in the home. I couldn’t even get through the first page upon reading “it’s your parent’s fault.” What a horrible message to send kids in these situations. I am returning this book immediately.

This book has helped me 3 year old in understanding, processing, and accepting divorce. There are questions in the book, and it would definitely be suitable for older children as well.

This is a beautifully written book addressed for very young children. As a professional is it something that I wanted to buy and have in my library to read to children and discuss of any changes that may occur in the family. It is very clear and well written. It helps me help parents.

To be used by those divorcing or divorced. A great book that settles a lot of questions as long as the parent or parents agree to discuss openly.
