Merriam-Webster's Everyday Language Reference Set

Bought these for my daughter since she was having problems in school knowing which definitions were accurate online or not. She uses them now daily for her homework. I am a believer in books that one can hold especially reference books! I only buy paperback or hardback books for reference such as natural healing books, herbal books, writing and vocabulary etc. This way if for some reason the digital world goes black for any reason, I have my priceless books.

This was ordered as a gift so I can not open it to see how comprehensive the dictionary is. To often I find that newer issued dictionary's are missing many words from our very rich past & I find this disturbing!!! Words such as "Ague " one of the most common meanings is being stricken with a uncontrollable shaking or quivering due to a infirmity. I find this word completely missing from many so called comprehensive dictionary's! Also missing from many modern dictionary is the word Revenant, used as the title of a new movie many modern dictionary's don't even have this word & its meanings in them. This is a sad statement as the more articulate a person can become the more important we realize that each of these words can be very helpful in relaying a more precise & accurate description of events in our life's. not to mention that having a broader vocabulary can allow you to express yourself in a much more poetic manner if desired. It reminds me of a old episode of "M.A.S.H." when Hawkeye was asked why he was reading the dictionary & his tongue in cheek answer was " Because if I read this book I have read every book ever written." While Hawkeye's banal response certainly doesn't imply reading the dictionary automatically acquaints you with the worlds complete works of classic literature, it doe's have its merit.

Product is new and in excellent condition as advertised. but I was utterly surprised and even shocked to see when opening the package that these were "mini" or "pocket-sized" books...I don't recall reading or seeing anything about that fact anywhere. Honestly I would not have bought those if I knew they were pocket-size books.

In my years as a parent at a parent-participation school, I have helped kids use a lot of dictionaries. In the past, it's been a choice between the "children's" dictionaries, which are too simple and often contain only the words the kids already know, and the adult dictionaries, which contain definitions primarily comprised of words that are longer and harder than the one being defined.This dictionary contains a lot of more challenging vocabulary - probably not every word you'll ever need to look up with a middle schooler, but certainly a high percentage of what 5th-7th graders require. And what's really great about it is that the definitions are written in down-to-earth language that is comprehensible to a student who didn't know the target word in the first place. Yet, it's a real dictionary - thick, and fully text-based - not one of those vocabulary-building picture books that passes as a dictionary for children.This is the most useful and user-friendly dictionary I've seen for "tweens." You'll probably need a "collegiate" type dictionary to fall back on, but this is where I have them look first. Definitely fills a gap in what was available before.

I had a set similar to this years ago, which became dog-eared & yellowed with constant use. I replaced them with this 3-book set & the Vocabulary Builder is the best part of this set. My husband & I both love learning new words, so we'll often sit & quiz each other from this new set of books. I also use them as quick references in my writing and business ventures. The dictionary is great as an alternative to the official scrabble dictionary (when we get tired of the seemingly made up words that can't be found in any other dictionary). Maybe I'm just strange--I did read dictionaries & thesauruses for fun as a child & teen.This set is an excellent value for the money & will be referred to & used again & again. No home or office should be without this reference set.

I purchased this quick reference kit for my son's freshman year in college... Yes, I know he can goggle many terms, for vocabulary, etc., but he has told me that having these books at his fingertip beats some of the goggle references he has done... He has told me that the information he needed was quick, to the point, and easily found... So, I do recommend this desk top reference for college freshmen and high school seniors.

No mistakes here. For old school folks who can't give up on paper and ink, these little gems can help smooth out a few writing wrinkles and provide a little post-grad educational brush-up for baby-boomers.

Good reading material

Good for price. Good for children and the whole family. Not suitable for carriying because it is a mass production.

Not really good as I expected

まだ英英辞典を使っておらず、これからどれを買おうかと考えている人には不向きです。やはり、ノンネイティブの英語学習者にとっては、LongmanやOxford、Cobuildがお勧めです。ちなみに私は、家の机上にはLongmanの英英辞典とRandom HouseのThesaurus、会社のPCにはCoubuildのCR-Romがインストールされてます。では、本辞典をいつ使っているかというと、もっぱら携帯用です。最近では時間があれば英語の活字を読むことにしているのですが、そのときにわからない単語を調べるには最適です。電子辞書などがあればいいのでしょうが、コストパフォーマンスから言って本辞典が一番優れていると思います。とりあえずは本辞典で調べ、会社や自宅に帰ってからちゃんとした辞書で調べることにしてみたらいかがでしょうか？
