Fun art, but...
Steadman's art is what makes this book worthwhile. The reminder of some of the species we've lost is timely and appropriate; the inclusion of a number of "species" we've never had may strike some as out of line, but they are very funny. The text is OK, but buy the book for the art -- this is not a technical treatise.

Excellent product - well received
I purchased this book as a present for my brother. He is a collector of Steadman art prints, so he was very excited to receive this interesting tome. I cannot speak to the contents, as I did not open the plastic encasing the book during shipping. That said, it was shipped well and quickly. The book is large and weighty. I believe it would make a great coffee table book.

My cheeks hurt from grinning
What a wonderful book! The artwork combined with the story/history is fabulous and fascinating. My husband and I are rationing ourselves as to how many "boids" we can look at each day, in order to extend the joy. There is good history in here, in the extinction of many birds. However, the development of the relationship of the author with Ralph Steadman is also fascinating, as is his explosion into these new creations. My face hurts from smiling.

Boy oh Boid Ralph! and to the moon Alice - or to wonderland!
As I have said previously "I love Ralph Steadman's honest window view and brutal take on the worlds he visits - running them through his fractured fractaled kaleidoscopic mind. Entertaining and brilliant." and I do quote myself. And go ahead - you can quote me too. This work is wonderful and percocious, parrelous and not predictable unless you were predicting a singular unique view. That it is!

Extinct Boids, Ralph Stedman
This is an amazing and interesting coffee table book by the best British counter-culture artist around. His concept for the book is great and the illustrations are marvelous and witty. You don't need to be a Stedman fan to enjoy this though artful book you do need an appreciation for the irreverent sense of humor he puts forth.

Okay, this is a fascinating read. What is missing, for me, is our loss of the heath hen. Terrible omission. Otherwise a must for anyone with a beating heart. If you don't care you are as dead as any of these lost animals

Extinct Boids - A RIot of Ralph Steadmanesque illustration
I was on tender hooks waiting for the arrival of Extinct Boids by Ralph Steadman. I’d finally purchased on impulse one night, on the heels of years, of many failed attempts. The dust jacket arrived damaged, badly packaged, water damage, scuffs, rubs & tears around the edge. A circumstance now considered oddly serendipitous & appropriate to the title. The book itself is Fabulous.A RIot of Ralph Steadmanesque illustration. A chaotic, cacophony of vibrant colour, splashes of ink, clearly applied with the deft confidence of a Master Penman. Illustrations Exploding with Steadman humour, imagination & his unique style.Fantastic!Amazing!Wonderful!Excellent!Thoroughly Fantabulous! This is a big book (36cm X 25.3cm) & apparently the original illustrations are huge. I would love to meet them in person. Ralphs pictures are on the Right page while the verso contains the conversation between Ralph and his coAuthor, Ceri Levy. Theirs is a witty discourse, by email, one of discovery & Ceri gives commentary for the audience. On the right of the verso, the text is dedicated to accompanying Ralph Steadman’s Avian creation on the right page.Ralph Steadmans vivid, wild images of Extinct Boids are unavoidably the focus of this book. Ya can’t miss ‘em.Enjoy

Great for bird lovers and fans of Ralph Steadman's art
I bought this for an artist friend of mine as I found Ralph Steadman's art very interesting, and quite contrasting to my friend's style. The paintings themselves are lovely, and the sheer variety of birds in this book is impressive. Each image comes with its own text, which I didn't get much time to read but seemed to be in the format of a diary of sorts, or a memo, I'm not entirely sure. The most notable thing about this book to me however was its size! It was about twice as big as I had expected (in width and height rather than thickness), and I think this works well since the pictures really jump out of the page. All in all a good book, not amazing, but if you're a fan of birds and of Ralph's art style then you'll most likely enjoy this.

Boids is OK
This book consists of approximately 100 paintings of extinct birds (boids) by Ralph Steadman together with accompanying text by Ceri Levy, a film maker. The artwork of Ralph Steadman is unique and is a joy to look at. There is humour in his paintings but after a while they become a little repetitive. The text is variable but also becomes repetitive, particularly regarding the causes of the boids' extinctions - often unknown, often put down to mans' negative effects on the local ecology and, commonly, rats. The most enjoyable aspects of the book were Ralph Steadman's imaginary boids - here he let go his imagination and humour and created some amazing boids - more, please!I am sure that this book would be of interest to professional ornithologists although not as a aid to their investigations. For fans of Ralf Steadman, the book is a must.
