Family favorite
My son loves this book, and so do I. It provides a great snapshot of the following languages: Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese, Turkish, Korean, English, German, Danish, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Russian, Polish, Hindi-Urdu, Bengali, Swahili, Zulu, Quechua, and Mandarin Chinese. Each snapshot has information like the history of the language, where it's spoken, the alphabet, and key phrases. The graphics are engaging and the information is presented in a very clear, organized way. There are all kinds of extras like information about the history of language, sign language, morse code, language families, etc... It's an amazing book, I'm not sure there's anything else like it. My son LOVES languages and wants to read this book daily. He asked me about Moldovan and wanted to know what that sounds like...hopefully Mr. Webb will consider a second volume about even more languages, I know we'd buy it. I recommend this book highly - kids are language sponges, and it's a great way to get them interested.

Such a lovely book
If your child is interested in different cultures and languages, this book is wonderful. We've been able to connect with Japanese friends, Italian friends and French friends by learning how to say key phrases. We love it.

7 year old is fascinated by this book
7 year old DD is fascinated by this book. At 7 years old she grasped that people all over the world speak different languages. I love that there are sections for spoken languages and also sections for sign language and Morse code.DD seems to focus in on one language for a few weeks before moving onto a new language. It also sparks an interest in each of the countries and how people live.

Excellent
This is a really interesting book for children - as soon as my 9 year old got it she was interested to have a go at pronouncing some of the example phrases on each double page and she was soon telling me facts about where the different languages came from and where they are spoken. There is a good range of languages covered from European to more exotic Korean and Hindi-Urdu. There's a map for each showing where it is spoken and everything is presented in an engaging and informative way. I was pleased to see some background information about sign language as well as invented language (Klingon gets a mention!)., as well as facts about why language is important and how it developed. The whole book is bright and engaging and interesting for Primary School aged children and beyond. It's great to see such positive messages about foreign languages - I saw this as someone who spends their days teaching a language and spreading their passion for languages. This book was a big hit with my child and is great for reading at home but could be handy in promoting Languages in school too.Highly recommended.
