I really enjoyed my stay at Snow Hollow
This movie wasn't available for digital rental where I live. Its synopsis sounded so intriguing to me, though, that I couldn't help getting it from here.I would do that again! It was exactly what I was looking for and it even had some surprising elements you don't often find in productions like these.First of all, the atmosphere surrounding it was eerie and mesmerizing. Basically, it's set in a small mountain town, Snow Hollow, and most of the scenes take place in the local police department. If you like that sort of things (kind of 'Twin Peaks' mystery setting), you've already got a good 40% chance of loving it.While the movie has indeed hints of comedy here and there that might remind you of the Coen brothers' cinematography, I think the mystery does its job when it comes to the darker part of the story involving the murders (that, for the record, are quite gruesome and do create quite an interesting contrast with the 'brighter' side of the movie). The whole plot has been masterfully developed by Director Jim Cummings. It's one of those movies that need more than just one watch-through to be fully understood and appreciated: you won't probably get all you need to know the first time you'll watch it. Despite some might be left a little bit puzzled by the lack of plain explanations on what's going on the first time, I can assure you all the pieces of this well-crafted puzzle will come into place after a couple of watches. I know it's basically a matter of tastes, but I do love when movies do like that. What it really shines bright in this case, though, it's the characters. They really are the crown jewel of Snow Hollow: they feel so real, they act so naturally (I was pleasantly surprised by the dad-daughter relationship, which is far less predictable than you might expect in this kind of movies). The character played by Cummings (who also happens to be the director and writer of Snow Hollow), is a great addition to the genre, too and effectively depicts a man split between his troubled family and a very stressful job.I also liked the score very much, especially the final track, that summarizes what this movie is about. The DVD quality isn't mesmerizing (maybe because I'm too used to blu-ray quality, by now), but it does its job and I couldn't find the blu-ray version at a reasonable price anywhere, anyway.Hope the movie will get the distribution it deserves. To sup up, I found The wolf of Snow Hollow to be a very pleasant surprise. It's available for digital rental on Prime Video (if I'm not wrong), but I'happy I bought it on DVD as it's one of those movies I'd really like to watch again in the future and truly worthy of a special place in my DVDs collection.

Disappointing
I sought this movie out after seeing the excellent Thunder Road. When I heard Jim Cummings had also written, directed and starred in a werewolf movie (my FAVOURITE genre) I couldn't wait to buy it.BIG disappointment. In Thunder Road, Jim C plays an underconfident cop having a breakdown following the death of his mother. In The Wolf of Snow Hollow he plays an underconfident cop having a breakdown following the deaths of townsfolk via the medium of werewolf.Although I was willing it to work, the breakdown trope seems less organic in this film, so that JC's range suddenly seems one-note, and the movie can't find its tone - veering drunkenly between comedy and horror and rarely settling anywhere effective.I'm giving it three stars because the snowy setting is very nicely rendered, the dialogue is pretty sharp and the werewolf is the best rendered since The Howling. Gotta love a werewolf on two legs!Really wanted this to be a five-star movie and hope that Jim Cummings can expand his range in other movies. I'm so ready to give him another chance.

worth a watch
This is a "good" film, a "solid" film, but it could have been great. By "great" I mean as good as Dog Soldiers, which this isn't. But is worth comparing the two, which is saying something. The problem here is that this film is shot like a star vehicle by Writer/Director/star Jim Cummings - whereas the film really needed the main character to step back and allow this to be an ensemble, because the supporting cast are excellent, or at least they would be if they were allowed a bit more screen time. Literally any of the other characters could have been given more to do. Still, there's a lot to enjoy here, like Robert Forster quietly stealing scenes as the ageing sheriff, or Cummings' portrayal of a man surrounded (*almost* entirely) by incompetents and falling apart under the stress... Comedy-horror is a notoriously tricky hybrid, but this - mostly - works, and keeps both halves of the equation in some sort of balance. I watched this thinking it was a debut, and thought it was a flawed but very assured one, so I felt a bit disappointed to learn that this was a second film. Heigh ho.

Quirky, odd, but enjoyable genre flick!
Enjoyed this movie quite a bit, it was an interesting take on the Werewolf genre, with some beautiful camera shots and moments of quirky humour! I've read in some reviews that they had a problem with the lead actor but I found him solid and I think his strange, slightly wooden style of acting was done on purpose to emphazize the trauma he was going through.. All in all it's well worth a watch and my only complaints were that it could have been slightly longer and felt a little rushed, but definitely give it a try if you like Werewolf movies or off beat dramas!

Highly recommended
I LOVED this. Easily one of the best films of the year.I only recently saw Thunder Road, Jim Cummings' debut film, which was great but often felt like a one man show. Snow Hollow is a much more rounded film in terms of story and characters. Horror comedy is very hard to pull off; usually directors get one aspect right but rarely both. Cummings succeeds at making you laugh out loud whilst also keeping the wolf scary (and there's plenty of blood). It shares a lot of themes with Thunder Road - neurotic cops, a bad father to a unhappy daughter, weird locals - but that's no bad thing. The tone is somewhere between that film & Ginger Snaps, with the local police stumped by a spate of killings, seemingly by a werewolf.Snow Hollow is a sleeper hit in the truest sense (it popped up on Amazon with no fanfare) and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
