I paid for mine, so I guess that's why it's just OK?
I was looking for something to spread fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides evenly in landscaping beds. I got tired of drilling holes in disposable plastic containers each time I got a new product with a different granule size. The hand-crank units were hard to control the spread in small areas, and the cheap ones self-destructed after a few uses. This shaker worked OK, but with a few annoyances. The plastic is so thin that the handle buckles and bends once you add product (weight) and start shaking. It still works, but it's pretty obvious where this thing is going to break eventually from normal use. And this is with light granules, not something obviously heavy like salt. If you have any doubts, look at the pictures of the Home-X spreader, you can see the buckling and distortion of the handle in the two stock photos where they show it in use. Some seem to prefer way the holes are aligned, but I would prefer if the outer holes were aligned such that all holes adjusted together evenly to the same size. When I adjust it down for fine granules like Snapshot, by the time the middle holes are the right size for a controlled flow, the outsides holes are basically closed, so you're just shaking out of the four center holes. It still works, but seems like the goal should be to adjust to different granule sizes by hole size (flow rate) not the number of holes (dispersion). Going from 12 holes to 4 means you have to shake it more to disperse the same amount of product, even if you try to cheat it by opening the holes just a bit wider (then you have to shake it faster to disperse the product so it doesn't just dump out).Overall, this feels like something pretty simple and useful that should be in every home improvement store for under ten dollars. I'm not sure if I would buy it again at regular price, but unfortunately I don't know of a better alternative to recommend.

Great little spreader...
I'm not one to right reviews on products, but I had to say something about this humble piece of plastic that some may not give a second look at. This winter has been typical (and at times, nasty) in New England, and my driveway is a fairly steep hill. I have been using this spreader much more often than I had originally thought I would, as a matter of fact, I don't now I did without it in years past. When my driveway is a treacherous sheet of ice, I have always used a scoop and bucket to spread sand. This method has been inefficient at best. The sand would be spread unevenly, and I would go through a 60-lb tube of sand in no time. With this spreader, the sand gets spread evenly, and allows me to completely sand my driveway using half or even a third of what I normally would use. Also, the design is such that the handle is ergonomical, and allows for spreading sand without the need of having a heavy bucket in tow. I may need to walk back fill it a few times in the course of a full sanding, but the small effort to do this is well worth the results. I generally leave the adjustable holes fully open which perfectly accommodates sand. Though I haven't used it for anything other than spreading sand, I'm fairly sure it would perform well with just about anything else (salt, seed, etc.) you may wish to spread. At this stage, it also seems to withstand use and abuse without complaint. I would say that this has been one of the most satisfying $15 purchases I've made this year, and I would (and have) recommended it to others with similar needs.

Excellent way to spread sand and ice-melting pellets
Seems funny to write a review of such a simple thing as a spreader, but this one is much better than anything else I've used. I used to spread with my bare hand but using this spreader cuts down on the waster from hand spreading. The long handle gives a great grip, and the openings in the lid are adjustable. I've used it to spread sand, "traction magic," and ice-melting crystals. I can shake the container from side to side or forward and back.

It is better than I expected for the uses I needed it
This container holds a lot and the holes have a "click adjustment" to open holes wider. So much easier than sliding to make the holes wider because powder gets clogged and then makes it hard to slide. This lid clicks each increment of space open and locks it until you click again to open more or less. I use for gardening to sprinkle insect powder, fertilizer, etc on all of my plants. It is better than I expected for the uses I needed it for

Solid little shaker
We have a small yard that had large bald spots with no grass growing thanks to an overgrown maple tree. We finally got the tree trimmed and were excited to try this shaker to spread our grass seed. We bought a mix that had seed, fertilizer and something else in it to help the grass grow. We spread the grass seed mixture by opening the hole width all the way and shook it in the bare patches. It worked great!! We had grass in a week!! The seed mixture wasn't heavy and the plastic handle held just fine. I only paid $11 for this item, which I feel was priced just right for what you get.

Works perfectly
I like it, it's perfect for my use. I use a granular pre-emergent and it's perfect. I have a over 7000 s/f lot and there is no problem using it. It spreads perfectly keeping it from going to areas I don't want, it's not too heavy so using it for a period is fine. The only gripe i have is that the handle bends. It needs to be higher strength. I wrapped it well with duct tape and it's great now.

I bought this to dust with diatamaceous earth. Even with the cap turned where the holes are barely open the powder still comes out in gobs.

I bought this to spread salt. The holes aren't big enough. I have to shake really hard to get the salt out. I may have to widen the holes myself. Also, it doesn't hold that much salt. That's on me, though. B/c it's clearly marked. But for people who live in Northern states, I'd get a bigger container. Or just use a bucket of salt and a shovel/cup.
