Geek Girl

Fun and Well Written
My eleven year old started reading this book over half term and then pressed it upon me, assuring me that I would enjoy it. I wasn't convinced judging by the cover. It just goes to show you that, as the adage goes; 'you should never judge a book by its cover.' Yes it is light, slightly silly teen fiction, but it is well written, rather funny and has heart that others in the genre sometimes lack. It reminded me rather of a series by Meg Cabot, who as well as writing the Princess Diaries tackled the world of modelling. I really didn't enjoy that book. I really did enjoy this. There are some wonderfully comic moments and I like the fact that it pricks the bubble of the dream to be a super model and how fabulous it might be. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

So much fun!
I loved this book. It was suggested for me to read as part of a course I was partaking in. There are many reasons why this book is so popular... It's humour, relatable characters (I adored Toby), it's morals, bullying etc. To me it was the ugly duckling for a modern day teenager. Holly smale used to do modelling when she was a teenager so I often wondered which parts were true and had happened to her when she was younger. There's a touching acknowledgement in the back where holly says thank you to her own alexa who gave her a reason to write geek girl... Part of me hopes "alexa" has read this book and thought wow..she did good! It's left me wanting more so I'm glad I've brought the 2nd one already!!

I loved this book!
What can I say? I was drawn to this book by the cover, and we all love a geek (especially if you are one like me!) and had to give it a go.It was a quick, fun read and had more substance to it than I was expecting. The main character Harriet reminded me of myself as a teenager as she was a social outcast who couldn’t do or say the right thing at the right time, but was very brainy. Although I have to say that the similarities to my own youth stopped at the modelling contract! Some parts of the book were laugh out loud funny, particularly when Harriet was getting into the world of modelling. I loved that it was a book about the geeky girl who did well in an unexpected way, and was a teeny bit jealous that I hadn’t had the same opportunities!I liked the style of writing for this book and hope that this isn’t the last we see of Harriet Manners. I will also be seeking out more of Holly Smale’s work in future.A great book, for both adult and young adult readers.

Disappointed with this book
My daughter does not like this book at all - I took it and read some and I can see why - it's terrible, introducing characters so quickly and you're lost and not sure what you're reading about. Not sure why these ratings are so good!
