Badlands...
This thoughtful Osprey Combat series book explores the lethal encounters between British infantrymen and their Mahdist warrior counterparts in the Sudan during the period 1884-98. These years include the failed Khartoum relief expedition and Kitchener's later campaign to conquer the Sudan. The author focuses on the tactical details that determined the outcome of combat. The author provides a broad introduction to the region, followed by a detailed examination of three separate combats. The text is very nicely supported by period and modern illustrations and battle diagrams. The campaigns in the Sudan have been the subject of several longer books; the author does excellent service here in capturing a very useful summary. Very well recommended to students of the conflict.

Great Overview of the Sudanese Campaigns
I knew relatively little about the Mahdist insurgency/state before I read this book. As with his excellent accounts of the Zulu War, Ian Knight does a fantastic job of describing these conflicts. In reality there are two separate campaigns with, at least on the British side, significantly different arms and equipment. Knight does an expert job describing all aspects of the combatants of both sides. Readers are left with a deep understanding of the situation on the ground and how the opposing sides approached combat. Within the top 10% of Osprey Combat series books; possibly within the top 5%.

Great series over all describing the combatants in this war. Many maps and drawings worth the read didnt know to much about this war before reading a clear victory for the British Army.

GOOD READ
Another well written and researched book from the master historian Ian Knight. The layout is the same as other combat titles and this volume is very nicely illustrated with very illustrative pictures and artwork. The battes chosen is a nice touch with two not so well known to many. And shows the strength and weakness of both sides well.
