24 Hours in Ancient Egypt: A Day in the Life of the People Who Lived There (24 Hours in Ancient History Book 2)

A day in the life
A quick book to read but so interesting. What I liked was each hour was devoted to one person from the midwife to the grave robber and different stations in life.Rather that jump from one person to the other trying to tell all there stories together. I will certainly read others in this series.

Insight into cultural norms and religious beliefs.
Offers interesting insight into aspects of day to day life in ancient Egypt. Fictional characters are often the vehicle for insights and so historic accuracy might appear uncertain.

Great, in-depth book ... shame about past/present tense switches
This was a book that, as far as loving and disliking it goes, was quite divisive. One the one hand, we have the same great format as we did in the '24 Hours in Ancient Rome' book. Each chapter focuses around the job/role/daily life of one individual in Ancient Egypt and, by the time the full 24 hours are up, you have a good understanding of how life may have been all those thousands of years ago.And then, on the negative side of things, you have the combined failings of author and editor as the writing switches between past/present tense far too often. Sometimes it does this in the same paragraph and you're just left scratching your head at how such dreadful use of the English language managed to get through into a finished copy that I have paid for. The tense switching didn't totally ruin it for me, as I just put it out of my mind as best I could. I found that my love of the subject, and the good, in-depth knowledge that was being showcased was enough to keep me engaged. If you are the sort of person who would find the constant switches from past/present tense infuriating, then it could well ruin the book for you. Despite the ancient goodness on offer.I think the final nail in the coffin of embarrassment comes during the acknowledgments where the editor is thanked ... I mean, it would have just been just disappointing if the editor hadn't been thanked, but it went from disappointing to embarrassing given the poor editing that went on.As a whole I really enjoyed this book but did feel incredibly let down by the writing, hence why this didn't score as highly as the Rome book did for me. I very much look forward to getting to the 24 Hours in Ancient Athens book as, Classical Greece, is perhaps my favourite time period.

Very interesting way of information giving
Nice way of providing facts and information for people who maybe dont want to trawl through large academic style books on the subject. It puts facts into stories which makes them easier to digest. Good introduction into Egyptian life, and not just for those of higher status

Accessible guide
A very readable guide to aspects of everyday life in ancient Egypt . Some may not like fictional characters being used to illustrate life in the past but I found it interesting and well worth it .

Great story
More story based so I felt it was good to place ourselves in their shoes but I'm wondering how much was borrowed from different eras and then generalized across all areas

Another lively addition to this series!
Apart from lovers of Egyptian history this text would be a wonderful introduction to that ancient culture for any intending traveller. As the author reminds us, the remaining physical relics and monuments record the lives and accomplishments of the ruling classes as well as the prevailing spiritual and funerary beliefs. However, many of the illustrations on the walls of tombs depict the daily activities of ordinary people. This book brings those to life and it also combines them to create a compelling image of a working, interconnected society. The inclusion of factual records from ancient writings and from modern investigations adds to the credibility of the imaginary 24 hour day. The text is written in a straightforward style. Each chapter is embellished with hieroglyphs and illustrations pertinent to the occupation or lifestyle of the character being described. And each chapter links seemlessly to the next as the author invents a plausible narrative to show these characters' activities joining and overlapping each others' as they go about their daily lives. I wish that more history texts focussed more often on the lives of ordinary people and delivered information in such an entertaining and accessible way.

Enjoyable but needs editing
I quite enjoyed this book overall, but it's in severe need of a good editor. There are numerous tense shifts and the author loves the phrase "a couple of," which is heavily overused, as well as other phrases indicating size. The poor editing took me out of the moment many times throughout the book. However, it's also a lot of fun, following the lives of 24 different characters in Ancient Egypt, many of them linked together. It's something I haven't seen done before and that outweighs the lack of a professional editing job, which is why I'm giving this 4 stars. It's more like 5 stars for concept and storytelling and 1 star for editing.
