The author gave his family's story and a good deal of ancient history for context. Well written in an endearing sort of way. A great book about Italy and what it means to be Italian.

A gift

Most books on Italian history concentrate on other regions of the country, and history from a nobility standpoint. This book is great! It tells the full history of this great but overlooked area. But it is more than that, it also delves into the life and experiences of the common people, the contadini. My father's family was from Abruzzo, and this book lets me comprehend and really appreciate the journey and lives they must have led from the early tribes up until they moved to America.

For my eldest son who unfortunately did not get to know his Italian grandparents. Then, Fencing tournaments took him to Italy and he visited his unknown relatives. He jumped at the change to do a university exchange to Italy. He now knows the country better than I do. A very thoughtful young man, he loved this book that detailed the region his wider family came from.
