Dry
The book is in depth on poses. However she doesn't use any of the common names for poses. There is a little bit of arrogance in her writing.

Illuminating, unique, probably invaluable
I've been practicing yoga asanas since about 1991. I've had the good fortune to have taken classes with K. Pattabhi Jois, some master Iyengar teachers including the magnificent Gabriella Giubilaro, and I have acquired a fairly good library of books on asana, pranayama, meditation, and various aspects of yoga philosophy. Dancing the Flame of Life really surprised me. It's a significant addition to the literature. Holleman, whose background is Iyengar-based, adds invaluable information that allows me to really make use of principles I knew of but didn't really understand, or simply didn't know about. For example, take a simple thing like padha bandha. I had never heard of it. Mula Bandha, Jalandhara Bandha, but Padha Bandha? Well, it's quite simple but it has changed the way I stand in the standing postures, and that change has enhanced my posture toe to scalp. Her mental approach to yoga is worth the price of the book, with her emphasis on a highly attentive but somewhat passive, or watchful approach as opposed to the "no pain no gain" approach that's crept into a lot of asana practice. I haven't listened to the CD that comes with the book yet but I will, soon. I do think that this book is better suited to someone who at least has an understanding of the fundamentals so they can fully appreciate the refinements and distinctions on hand but I would recommend this to everyone who has more than a passing interest in hatha yoga. It's that good.

Dona Holleman illuminates yoga
This updated edition of "Dancing the Body of Fire" is an incredible resource for anyone interested in yoga. It has clear, photo-illustrated instructions for dozens if not a couple hundred yoga asanas, from basic to highly advanced. There are extensive sections on yogic breathing, on the path of living one's yoga on and off the mat, and there's even a poignant personal section describing a recent trip back to Dona Holleman's Asian birthplace and childhood, interlaced with memories. In our uncertain times, Dona's stories of growing up displaced in a world in cataclysm can teach us so much. Highly, highly recommended.
