An excellent manga worth the hype, drawn with delicacy and love
First of all I’d like to answer the question of why it’s called, ‘Orange’. My understanding is that orange and oranges are connected with joy and happiness and the series is about finding the joy they lost because of the mistakes they made as children. This is an excellent manga series, I’ve given it 5 stars, but it’s 5 stars with a few caveats.First of all the artwork is gorgeous. She’s a wonderful artist and puts not just personality into each of her characters, but also her settings. You can tell that she is loving drawing and writing this manga and it quickly draws you into their world as a result.Spoiler alert 🚨This is a science fiction manga, and some science fiction manga gets pretty funky. But as far as sci fi goes, this one is pretty tame and the ‘science’ in it thus far is based off of a quick lecture on the theoretical possibilities of going faster than the speed of light. This deeply impacts the characters but at least in this volume, there are no hints about how the characters, who aren’t incredibly clever, figured out how to send letters to each of themselves ten years in the past.I think that what makes this manga so beautiful is something nebulous, an intangible desire we all have to know what would have happened if we would have taken the road not traveled. The main character, Naho, is nearly aggravatingly self effacing and shy. Everything is insanely awkward even when she knows she’ll be regretting not being braving a decade in the future. That part is a little uncomfortable, but what we can take away from it, is that it’s difficult to change ourselves and even more difficult to give the gift of wisdom to the young. What would you tell yourself ten years ago? Would you have listened? Could you have believed yourself blindly? These thought provoking questions and the love put into the characters, culture and city are why I’ve given the series 5 stars. It leaves a lot of questions and there arent very many words on each page, something that I think could be done much better. Maybe the artist in ten years will re-write an improved version having learned from her development of this series. It’s well worth a read and a bestseller for good reason.
