how much does the mascara smudge under bottom lashes?

I have the WATERPROOF of this stuff, and I have black smudges under my eyes halfway through the day! And I don't apply it to my lower lashes; just my upper lashes! I love this stuff, how well it spreads out my lashes; but hate that it smears under my eyes MORE than my WASHABLE great Lash.... I'm a makeup noob though; if anyone has any tips to avoid the smudges, let me know!
