will work for combining two audio signals on one input - just be smart
i see a lot of reviews on this product stating that you will wreak havoc on your components or suffer from horrible audio if you try to combine two outputs into one input. to this i have to say, sure, if you don't know what you're doing. but if you're smart about it, and only run one component at a time, you shouldn't have any issues. the trick is to combine line outputs from two similar devices. for instance, i combined the outputs from my dvd player and a media streaming console. the signal strength/resistance, and subsequently, the volume of each device is the same when coming across my tv speakers. if you try to put an adapter from a headphone output together with a component's audio line output, you're gonna have problems with gain levels and overall volume. for me, this setup works perfectly when trying to connect three devices to an old tv with only two source selections in my son's toyroom. the wii goes to a/v 1, the dvd player video is rca and the media streamer video is component on a/v 2, and the audio also gets combined on a/v 2 via this cable. works like a charm! anyway, onto the product review. the actual cable does not feel any more durable than the standard rca audio cables that come packaged with most entertainment devices these days. the regular male jacks are also about standard. the piggyback jacks are nothing too special, until you remember that they're piggyback jacks and can combine two audio sources (and yes, of course, split one audio source into two). this is absolutely the only thing that makes this cable special. no fancy gold plating or cable shielding exists with this cable. if shipping was not included for free, i would have not spent $3.36 for this. i have plenty of rca audio cables laying around that i could have simply spliced together to acheive the same result. really, the main reason i got this cable was to prove that you actually can combine two outputs into one input. don't let the nay-sayers fool you.

It works and is dirt cheap, what else could you want?
I bought this cable to have one side going from the output of my television to my stereo. The piggyback part is connected to my stereo through a 3.5mm to rca splitter. This allows me to use my stereo as a surround sound OR as an entertainment stereo. I can have my television playing through it and the piggy back has priority, so if I plug my ipod into it, it will take over the television sound. I have not noticed issues with quality, I commonly watch blue ray dvds on my television and enjoy the sound very much. For the $6-7 that I paid for this I am more then satisfied. Again I am using this cable to make 2 outputs go into 1 input and have had no issues at all. So for the reply saying the cable isn't good for that... I am doing it and have been for 2 years now and still like it :) Bought oct 11, 2011

Works well for intended purpose, inexpensive
Several reviewers seem to be using this cable for unintended purposes. The cable is intended to be used to connect one output to two inputs. Using it to connect two outputs to one input might work if you are lucky, but is fraught with problems, and it is not the cable's fault. Using it to connect one output to two inputs connects an output of approximately 100 ohms impedance to two very high impedance inputs, which works very well at the very low analog audio frequencies. Analog audio is not very demanding, and as long as the cable is reasonably shielded and makes good contact at the connectors, it will work well. Connecting two outputs together has problems. Standard line outputs have an impedance of about 100 ohms, but can vary. A headphone output, which can usually be used as a line out with success (and is commonly done), has an output impedance of about 30 ohms or so. Speaker outputs, which can also work successfully to a line input (if you don't turn up the volume too high), has an impedance more like 4 ohms. If you connect two line level outputs together with a similar impedance, you might get away with it. Mixing any of the types listed above will provide unpredictable results, usually bad. Connecting two speaker outputs together might burn out the output transistors. In any case, it is NOT the cable's fault. The cable just connects the wires together. It does not perform magic. For connecting two outputs together, a $50 cable will work as poorly as a $5 cable. Use a switchbox instead. Gave only 4 stars as it is not a super high quality cable, but for the price I was not expecting anything more. At Radio Shack this cable is $16.95. Yes, it is better quality and gold plated, but this one works just fine for my needs. So use it for connecting one output to two inputs. Do do not use it for connecting two outputs to one input. Use a switch box for that instead. Do not use it for video. Maybe it will work, but it is not designed for that.

Great, versatile cables
Great cables. The piggy back connectors allow me to connect the aux outputs of my mixer to a recorder in my rack while allowing videographers to also have a direct line out to their video console, cameras or portable recorder.

Worked well for what I needed
I have a DLP and while it does have HDMI, for various reasons it's better to play games using the VGA port. The VGA input has a single set of RCA jacks and I wanted to connect the audio for my PC and Xbox 360. The 360 has a VGA adapter with RCA connections. I plugged the male end of the pass through into the RCA connection on the TV, and used a gender changer to connect the male terminal ends to the RCA output on the 360 VGA adapter. I plugged a 25 foot RCA to 3.5mm cable into the female end of the pass through and connected the 3.5 mm end to my PC. Now I can switch the video input with the press of a button and get audio on both. I was worried about interference or low audio, but it hasn't been a problem with either source. Since the PC and 360 are never in use at the same time, there's no problems with garbled audio.
