GRE Tutor Review: Strategies are fine; practice questions aren't
I've been tutoring people for the GRE since 2008, so I write this review from that perspective. This book is not a complete preparation for the GRE, despite its marketing. On a basic level, it is a presentation of strategies for the most common GRE question types, taught with Princeton Review-authored practice questions. It also contains practice tests, written by the Princeton Review. The strategies are pretty good. They'll give you a foundation for understanding how to tackle GRE questions. However, the practice questions and tests in this book aren't very realistic. Just like any third-party prep company, The Princeton Review's material doesn't adequately capture the nuances and complexities of real GRE questions. For math questions, compared to The Princeton Review's, you'll find that ETS questions are not only wordier, but also more amenable to logical shortcuts. For verbal, you'll find that ETS questions are more complex, but also fairer in terms of writing choices that are definitely right or wrong. It's not like using this book's practice material is harmful or anything, but there's an opportunity cost, and if this book is all you use, you're going to be surprised on test day by how difficult the real GRE is.If you found yourself in possession of this book, here's how I'd use it.1. Learn the strategies. But then practice them on official ETS GRE questions, not Princeton review questions.2. Use Khan Academy to build conceptual foundation for GRE math. This book is woefully inadequate for that since it doesn't provide basic-level practice, and practice is how you gain math skills. Khan Academy is free, and not only has great math instructional videos but has lots of exercises to practice with.3. Do most of your practice with official ETS material. After all, ETS writes the GRE, not The Princeton Review. Also, the book seems to function as a marketing vehicle to steer people toward the Princeton Review's online courses. I do not recommend those courses, either, since they use Princeton Review material. In my study plans, you'll find all my GRE prep recommendations.
