Everybody Cooks Rice

Great Book - Love Photo Style
This is a good book to let readers know that all kinds of people eat rice! I really like the retro pictures, the recipes at the end of the book, and that they modeled one of the characters after my own mother. The only thing I do not like is that some of the pages are bleeding into one another. For example, if there is a large picture on one page, on the opposite page there will be excess ink. Not a lot, and it’s probably not noticeable to a lot of people, but I guess I have a touch of OCD...

Has diversity but also a bit “othering”
I enjoyed the intersectionality of the book and was hopeful that the other books in the series could be told from the perspective of one of the neighbors instead of the same “generic” white American family. It felt slightly “othering” that the main family was white and all the other families had a parent or parents that didn’t have to work late or were recent immigrants. It could have been an opportunity to have the protagonist be diverse.

Fun multicultural book - with recipes!
What a fun book! The book follows a girl through her neighborhood as she tries to track down her brother to bring him home for dinner. She lives in a diverse and friendly neighborhood, and as she visits each home, she gets to see what's cooking for dinner in each neighbor's house. It turns out, despite the many cultures and nationalities represented, there's rice on every table. In addition to vivid descriptions of each meal in the text of the book, there are also recipes in the back! The illustrations have a slightly dated feel to them, and I wish the skin tones were a bit more realistic and diverse. But it's still a solid multicultural book, with an engaging story - plus recipes! It made me and my kiddo (age 4) wish we lived in such a cool neighborhood!

Wonderful book with positive cultural themes
I loved everything about the book; how inquisitive the children were, how they were eager to learn about other cultures. It was a wonderful book that promotes the beauty of diversity and celebrating our cultural similarities and differences.

Everybody Cooks Rice book
I was looking for a book about rice to go with a program I made about rice and rice terraces. This book was perfect. It was a short story complete with recipes about how different families from different cultures cook rice in a neighborhood. Inexpensive too.

I was thinking this ws a different book when I ordered it. I work with 2 year olds and this scales a bit older. I will still be able to use the ictures and tell the story on a level my children can understand. It's more pre-K and up in my opinion.
