Just clean the wood, sand it (no finer than 120 grit), clean and dry again, then paint on the first coat. It will be a bit rough. Then use fine sandpaper (~220 grit) to smooth it, then paint another coat. Three coats for outdoor wooden furniture. It will look better than new. Made my cheap beer garden table look amazing after it got shabby from weather. This pint size is pretty small though, I needed two cans for three coats.
