WOW, I didn't think anyone was still selling this version...
Ever since the Windows 95 (Command & Conquer Gold) came out, the series has continued to be one of the best strategy/combat game since 1996. Course, we can't forget Red Alert, Tiberian Sun, Generals, and many other variations of this series. If ever you wanted to play the best strategy/combat game, this series is the one to get. This is AWESOME, I can't believe someone is selling the DOS version of this game. What many people don't know is that this game was ORIGINALLY started as a DOS game first. It was due to popularity that the game was converted and reprogrammed to Windows that the company stopped making the DOS version. What many people don't know is that the DOS version was easier to edit and alter the game mechanics than the Windows version. This is the original DOS version and to me, one of the best versions since it was the original. Anyone who knows about the DOS version will also agree that this version was the best to play. Course, since DOS doesn't exist much anymore, (Unless you have a virtual PC program or DOSBOX) it would be hard to play for anyone who is not familiar with the older operating system. When this game went GOLD, most of the DOS versions pretty much disappeared from the gaming shelves, because Windows gaming was becoming a much higher demand. During this time, I had tried to get my hands on the DOS version, because most knew about a Windows made version, but some of my friends dis-believed that it was originally started as a DOS game. Now, I can go back to my friends and finally throw it in their face and finally prove that I know what I was talking about. For those of you who don't know, Command & Conquer is a real time strategy game where you play as either the good guys or bad guys. The game comes with 2 CD's. (Already, you are thinking, Install CD and Play CD, WRONG) CD 1 allows you to play as the good guys, CD 2 allows you to play as the bad guys. You may be thinking "Why would you make a game with siding forces on separate CD's?" Well, believe it or not, the reason is so if you go to a friends house and they don't have the game, you have all you need to play to start a head to head game. You just have to argue over who plays the good guys and who plays the bad guys. Ideally, the game itself is all you need to start playing head to head. The game plays very well as long as you had the speed and memory for it. (486/66 Mhz, DOS 5.0 or higher, 8 Megs of RAM or better, MCGA graphics card [320x200 resolution with 256 colors], hard drive with 20 megs of space minimum, double-speed CD-ROM, MSCDEX 2.2, Mouse with mouse drivers, 4800 to 14400 baud modem for network play... Oh man, Nostalgic moment... If you have no clue what half the specs are stated, maybe you should consider getting the GOLD version of this game) What's also cool is that the documentation also gives some examples of how to set up your sound card for the Sound Galaxy Pro, ProAudio Spectrum 16, and Sound Blaster 16.I got this game in about 5 days using standard USPS. Not bad for time. I bought it new, because I wanted it in the best possible condition I could fine it in. It came in it's original box, shrink-wrap sealed with all the instructions, documentation and original ads. (I doubt very much the DOS tech support hotline works anymore, LOL) This game is only for those who know how to create a DOS configuration or have an emulator that can run DOS. (DOS 6.0 would be ideal) This game is not for people who are not familiar with older operating systems or have no clue how to setup a sound card,s ADDRESS/IRQ/DMA or AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS. If you have no clue what I just said, you should stop reading this right now and instead get the GOLD version of this game. Not for computer amateurs.Hope this review helps. ^_^
