50 Scientifically-Supported Techniques to Create More Confident and Compelling Speakers Speaking Up without Freaking Out by Matt Abrahams is an easy-to-read book containing over 50 anxiety management techniques that are based on scientifically supported theory and evidence that will help you become a more confident and compelling communicator regardless of where you present -- on stage, in a meeting or virtually. Confident and compelling presenting involves a complicated mix of physiological and psychological factors. In the 3rd edition, this book provides specific guidance and opportunities to practice developing the skills you will need to feel more comfortable speaking in front of others in an engaging way. This book is divided into seven chapters: Chapter 1 describes speaking anxiety, how it shows itself, its negative effects, and how you can appear less nervous. Chapter 2 describes the main theories about why people feel anxious when speaking and, importantly, offers you several specific techniques to reduce speaking anxiety and bolster your confidence. Chapter 3 details how you can use your nonverbal presence and voice to not only appear more confident, but also feel more confident. Chapter 4 how focusing on your audience’s needs and connecting your content to them can reduce your anxiety and make your presentations more compelling. Chapter 5 provides techniques and guidance on how to structure your presentations to better help you and your audience remember what you present. Chapter 6 teaches how to resist and stop some self-defeating beliefs and behaviors that perpetuate and exacerbate anxiety. Chapter 7 addresses how to put all this information to work for you by creating your own Anxiety-Management Plan. A glossary is included that will explain the more technical, scientific terms found in the book, along four appendixes Appendix A suggests techniques for managing anxiety that comes from audiences not immediately present for your speech (e.g., conference calls and web presentations). Appendix B gives additional suggestions for those who are not native English speakers. Appendix C addresses how to feel confident during a question and answer session, while providing clear and concise answers. Appendix D discusses two specific techniques/approaches to motivating and persuading your audience. Review: Practical, specific and well-thought out speaking strategies - This concise, easy-to-read, yet chock full of research book is a great handbook for addressing public speaking anxiety. It covers soup-to-nuts: how to overcome roadblocks like procrastination and perfectionism in writing a speech to how to handle the anxiety that can grip many (if not most) of us right before taking the "podium". The book has little highlighted "Try This" sections that are extremely helpful and applicable. Extra bonus-- the book is small enough to fit into a backpack or bag so you can keep it with you for emergency situations (like right before going on stage). Review: Great tips from start to finish - Often when I finish a business book, I realize that I got most of the content of the book in the first third. The best info is at the beginning of the book and the rest of the book, not so much. This is not the case with Matt's book! This book has great tips from start to finish. Grab a highlighter and get busy highlighting. Read and enjoy the entire book. Your public speaking will significantly improve with Matt's stellar tips.

Multifaceted view on addressing speaking anxiety
I appreciate the brevity and multifaceted approaches discussed. The use of clinical language and a good glossary were well appreciated for my structured and analytical perspective. There is a very terse appendix summarizing all of the techniques. I will refer to this book time and again.

Concise and Straight to point yet More Detailed than the You tube Video!
I've seen the youtube video by Stanford Graduate School of Business and was compelled to buy this book. A great source to better public speaking as I cannot remember all the points from the video at will. To me, there are a lot of additional points not mentioned in the video so this is a great buy! I would recommend this book to anybody. There is not much one can really write about public speaking other than the techniques. This is not a thick book downed with a lot of stories proving a point. Matthew Abrahams does a good job in walking the talk. He doesn't nor have to bore the audience. Thanks!

Well structured and examples that work
If you get nervous when speaking in front of a crowd, you need this book. It's a perfect guidebook that you can reference over and over. The way it is structured makes it extremely easy to follow along with and remember the main points. The examples given in the book are both realistic and more importantly, they work! If you truly want to overcome your fears of public speaking, add this book to your collection.

Anxiety is Good. Manage Your Anxiety.
I use Matt’s book, “Speaking Up Without Freaking Out”, in my MBA classroom. As a lecturer, I stress to students to be “succinct” and “cogent” in order to be effective business communicators; and that’s exactly what this book is. It’s not a dense book; and only contains useful and practical suggestions to be an effective speaker. You would think that speaking anxiety is negative and should be avoided or eliminated. Instead, Matt talks about embracing our anxiety and learning to manage it instead of it managing you. Like many words of wisdoms, the messages are counterintuitive. You’ll discover plenty of words of wisdom in this book once you get your hands on it.
