Unfiltered Truths about Reconstruction in the United States
Dark Sky Rising: Reconstruction and the Dawn of Jim Crow by Louis Henry Gates, Jr. with author Tonya Bolden is truly a compelling book telling the unfiltered historical accounts and truths about Reconstruction in the United States. This book is a must-read as it sheds light on the hope African Americans had in this country after the Emancipation Proclamation and the deception by politicians that flipped their hopes and dreams upside down. The PBS series that Louis Henry Gates, Jr narrates on Reconstruction is a complementary visual 'must-see' to explore and understand the highs of expectations African Americans had, to nosediving into the lowest mockery of a system that was brutal with unfathomable broken promises, heartache, and tragedy. This is a great read!

Excellent book for a concise summary of the topic.
Perfect for the high school/middle school reader and great for anyone who wants to brush-up on the subject. Well written. A book by a Harvard scholar, presented in a accessible way.

History too important to ignore
Dark Sky Rising lays bare the arduous road paved for the African American people and every minority group living free in America. This book highlights the darkness of the twisted souls that ruled through terror, operated by hate, and was often upheld by a ruthless system. The sorrow on these pages will never stop the tears that our ancestors cried. They cried when freedom came and thought they would finally have a fair chance. The stories, clashes, riots, murders, and atrocities detailed here show that their full taste of freedom never came.We learn via this informative book that many who survived to see slavery's end never saw slavery's demise. All of the things that made slavery work continued in the communities, minds, legal system, and government agencies.I don't read to get angry, foster hate, or hold those living accountable. I read in a quest for knowledge, understanding, and awareness. We must know the truth so that these horrors cannot be repeated. And so that no one suffers in silence and murdering racist cannot walk freely. This is an important part of history.
