No: it is not 9" deep. It is about 5.5" deep.

Q: first time mom here... How many of these should I register for?

I used three with three sheets. Make the crib up three times (layers). When there is an accident in the middle of the night take one layer off and put the baby back to bed. Next accident take another layer off. It saves you the effort of looking for clean crib sheets and protectors in the middle of the night.

Q: will this fit a standard toddler bed mattress?

Yes, it should. I believe standard toddler bed and crib are the same mattress size!
