Q: Is the remote included?

No. It does not include a remote. You have to buy it separate.

Q: Once this device is set up, file settings, folders and such, is it as simple as hitting record each time you need to record something?

It can be... I have mine set up to automatically record when it detects sound at certain volume. So I press "record" and it blinks until I start making music at which point it begins recording. I think it has some sort of buffer feature too so that it doesn't miss that first sound you make. When I stop, the recording will discontinue after a few seconds. This is exactly what I wanted. A recorder that is in line and always ready.

Q: Does the unit need to be on to pass audio from rca in to rca out?

Sorry, I Really don't understand the question, The unit has two inputs, on the front you have two PLA and on the back you have two RCA in. The unit also output to 2 RCA (on the back) and records to SDCARD in a great quality

Q: can you record with a usb drive?

No. There aren't any USB ports on this device, so you can't use one to record to. You'll need an SD Card or a micro SD card with an Micro SD to SD Card adapter to record.
