Update: stretched
Update: The tires stretched quite a bit. A digital caliper shows 50mm on the 45s. This expanded the tire to within a few mm of the drive side chain stay— not enough clearance to be safe from potential frame damage. There’s a notion out there that gravel tires are better and faster if they are smooth. I had to get over that sentiment to buy these. But I’m very happy with them. I’m not spinning out like I used to; this would seem to mean more power is being transferred. They also have a center line ridge that I think makes them good and relatively fast on the road. And of course the width and knobs mean shredding trails and fire/logging roads with abandon. Like other tires, tire pressure needs to be dialed in. As far as net speed goes, I can certainly believe they aren’t as aero as a smoother tire. But overall I’m sold.
