Angel Time: The Songs of the Seraphim 1

Like eating popcorn
Like eating popcorn, it seems like a good idea, is enjoyable, but is not the best thing you consumed that day. This was my first Anne Rice book, prompted by an NPR interview about her spiritual life and her new angels series after years of Vampires. I never had the remotest interest in Vampires, and found the rationale she presented for looking at a fictional flip side with angels intriguing. Spiritual lit is not my thing but a clever play on an idea we all have some preconceptions about does appeal. Read this in a couple of hours and enjoy, then wonder whether it's worth reading the next in the series...just published. Reads like a TV show... Like calories spent on popcorn, I don't regret the time reading this. Just don't expect spiritual uplift, deep characters, or plot that isn't obvious. With angels on your side the good guys are sure to win. ( I preferred Chrichton's book Timeline about going back in time. His characters confronted the difficulties which arise because of differences in their skills and expectations when dropped into a different time...something Rice's character completely ignores!)

I was looking forward to reading the recent change in her writing. This book did not disappoint. She still masters the art of plot and character. I had grown tired of the dark alienation in previous works, She likes to pose deep questions about good and evil. The answer, for her, is seldom black and white. She espouses atonement;this bookk was not without redemption, and opens the door to sequel.

What a fantastic book. I have long loved Anne Rice and all she has written. This is a story that combines my love of history and a great novel. This is a book that I was proud to recommend to my mother who in turn recommended it to friends. After reading this I quickly devoured the sequel.

It's okay, I guess
It's been a very long time since I read any of Anne Rice's novels and I have to admit I was rather disappointed with this one. I much prefer her older, darker works.

Not what I was expecting.
I bought this book expecting it to be a mystery about a hitman and instead got a book about religious times in the past. I was semi-dissapointed. However once I got into the story I readd liked the book. I gave it three stars because of my initial disspointment, but it is a worthwile read.
