Q: what type of receptacle does this use for 230V?

Unless they changed the electrical cord to the planer, it comes without a plug which you have to purchase. You will have to buy both the plug and the outlet to match for a 230V wiring. They recommend a 30 amp breaker and #10 wiring to supply the machine with enough electrical power to run the motor properly. It's best to talk to a knowledgeable electrical supplier to get the right parts. You will be able to tell a 230 outlet because the two electric outlet slots run horizontally instead of vertically as do the prongs on the plug. Hope this helps.

Q: Powermatic was suppossed to redesign the cutterhead to improve the finish of the planed material. Has this been done or is it in development?

Russ, I had the same question, so I contacted the cutterhead manufacturer (Byrd Tool). At first, the gal I spoke with on the phone said that was a misquote that appeared in one of the woodworking magazine reviews. She told me that the cutterhead was not going to be redesigned, it's the same design as they've always used. Then, I received an e-mail from Tom Byrd, the owner / President of Byrd tool. Here is exactly what he sent me: " To answer your question on design change, the "new" design has 5 wings with a total of 75 tips. We changed the offset of the knife along with slightly increasing the radius of grind in order to get a flatter wood surface. The new cutterhead was actually being shipped at the time of his article, but was not the same as he had tested. Even though I think he had tested a 5 wing head, we soon after that change had also improved the cut by the additional changes as mentioned. The new design has been delivered to customers in the field for at least a year now. "

Q: Can this be re-wired to 110V?

Do NOT try to run a 3hp motor on 110v the amp draw is around 30! If you changed out your 15 amp breaker with 40 amps you would still need to swap out the wires for 8 awg. Also the motor will run a LOT hotter at 110v. If you are spending 3500 on a planer, spend the little extra and wire 240v into your shop so you can run your tool properly.
